It could also mean that Gardner and Ellsbury are both on the trade block with Frazier waiting. Nice post

Not easy guys to unload, although they're still decent defensively when healthy. I don't consider Cespedes a very good outfielder - borderline lazy, actually.

He seems more like the DH type to me.

If we could trade McCann, Gardner, and Ellsbury this offseason, I would give them an A+ before they did anything else.

Yeah, that's the thing - how do you justify overpaying for a big bat that seems destined to become a full time DH, after so many big contracts in the past to guys who could play their positions well at the time, but then created a log jam at DH for whatever reasons?

plus we dont need anymore outfielders. We have a ton in the system. Save the money for a 3rd basemen and starting pitching

There isn't much available this season, but next year they could get Machado for 3rd. OR they may just move Castro or Didi to 3rd and put Torres at 2nd. Or Torres at 3rd. Either way, Torres is coming soon.

Yep, starting pitching you have to shell out for - and take that chance on a long term contract. With the money saved on the players dumped, traded, or retired, and now playing all these young guys - I don't see why they can't get a pitcher (Sale?) or two that they've coveted. For a DH, it seems there's always a few Chili Davis / Cecil Fielder types that you can get for a much shorter contract and not be stuck with when their productivity falls off the cliff. The NL spits these out for taking, once they cannot play the field on a daily basis.

Torres and Frazier will be up really soon. Add Headley to the list of guys I would love to see moved.

Kendrys Morales would be that type of guy for us.

MLB Hot Stove Rumors: Yankees getting set for busy offseason?
Yankees GM Brian Cashman may have big plans for his roster this winter

Trade Brian McCann and replace his bat
The emergence of catcher and AL Rookie of the Year finalist Gary Sanchez rendered McCann somewhat superfluous on the Yankee roster. Given that the free agent market for catchers is mostly limited to Matt Wieters, Jason Castro, and Wilson Ramos (whose surgically repaired knee might not let him catch at all), the trade market for McCann could be a healthy one. McCann will be 33 in February, but he still has home run power and patience at the plate, especially by positional standards. He's also under contract through 2018 with a vesting option for '19. The Yankees would likely have to kick in some cash to defray the cost of the minimum $34 million he's still owed, but they also might net some interesting young talent in return.
GM Brian Cashman has acknowledged listening to offers on McCann. Via the New York Post, Cashman also says that the Yankees will not be in the market for a DH if McCann is still in the fold. If McCann is dealt, though, either Carlos Beltran or Kendrys Morales may become a free agent target.
                            Bring back Aroldis Chapman
As noted in this space, the Yankees have already expressed interest in free agent closer Aroldis Chapman. To repeat, the Yankees traded Chapman to the Cubs leading up to the non-waiver deadline last year, so there's some familiarity there. As well, Chapman profiles as a strong near- to mid-term asset, and he's certainly advance the Yankees' contending cause in 2017, 2018, and beyond. Chapman is likely to command a record contract for a reliever, but the Yankees have vast resources and more than $23 million coming off the books with Mark Teixeira's expired contract.
                            Add a bat-first outfielder
While the Yankees still might opt to forge ahead with young outfielders like Aaron Judge, Tyler Austin and Aaron Hicks prominently in the outfield mix, they also may see the need for veteran power at a corner spot. To that end, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports notes that the Yankees have reached out to representatives for free agents Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Bautista. Cespedes would obviously be the preferred option, given his excellent power and the fact that he's significantly younger than Bautista. The competition for Cespedes figures to be much stiffer.
                            Shore up the rotation
Right now, the Yankees are looking at a 2017 rotation that includes Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia, and ... to be determined. Given Sabathia's age and performance trends and Tanaka's and Pineda's injury histories, there's a lot of uncertainty there. Unfortunately, the free agent market doesn't offer much help, as this winter we have perhaps the weakest crop of free agent starting pitchers in history. The best of these is probably Rich Hill, a 36-year-old curveball specialist who for a long had a decidedly loose grip on a major-league career. Even so ...

Cashman said #Yankees plan to reach out to Rich Hill's reps. Stressed again he plans to reach out to a lot of FAs.

Hill makes sense for a team angling to contend in 2017, but at his age he offers little certainty beyond that window. The Yankees, though, figure to be desperate on this front.
Anyhow, it's November, and it's the Yankees. Definitely more to come on these particular matters.

Heard a rumor about a Yanks Mets trade....

C Brian McCann for OF Curtis Granderson / OF Jay Bruce and SP Robert Gsellman.

                              It was in Newsday.
