  • Sam Darnold Thread

I am going to try and do threads for the top 5 prospects in this draft, since odds are we are getting one of those guys. The first one is Sam Darnold. There are mixed opinions on him. I think he has everything it takes to be a star in this league but there will be a learning curve. For the keep Eli another year crowd, drafting Darnold would allow this imo. Lets take a look at some of his strengths and weaknesses:

Working through Progressions - This GIF below shows that Darnold is not a 1 read QB> He starts looking left and comes across the field to his crosser for a completion. Not the greatest throw but good enough. This is something that a lot of QBs coming out of college do not do well...especially 20 year olds

Good arm strength shown here. This throw should allow for the receiver to get some YAC, but the received here does not make a very athletic play and goes down:

A strike to the slot WR allowing YAC

Using his mobility to make a play

Strike with a defender bearing down

    Mobility

This is a ridiculous throw on the move

Big time throw to the opposite hash

Aaron Rodgers level throw. The arm talent is unquestioned

    Amazing Throw

When he sets his feet, good results happen

The Ohio State game was a mixed bag. Many thought he played awful. I have to disagree. There were some bad decisions and bad throws. But not all bad

    Absolute dime

    https://j.gifs.com/MQ5KgO.gif

Here's a bad one. Does not see the safety here at all

    https://j.gifs.com/jqOgVP.gif

Sloppy with the ball in the pocket. He tends to do this often. Needs to be fixed

    https://j.gifs.com/wmRy81.gif

Heres a throw you have to make

    https://j.gifs.com/L851lX.gif

Stares down his receiver and gets picked

    https://j.gifs.com/XokX2A.gif

This is something we should like to see. Audibles and changes protection. Not a lot of college QBs do this. Bad throw but whatever

This is a start to this. Gonna try to get some more in later. I think there is more good than bad with him. The turnovers are a concern, but I think pro coaching will help here. There are things Darnold can do that simply are special. I think his ceiling is an elite level NFL QB. The downside is I think he will have to sit and learn from a vet year 1.

    Thoughts?

The knock against Darnold is the fact he's a one read QB and the dude got Eli's turnover potential in him. With time, he too might lead the league in interceptions three different times.

If you watch the tape, he is not a one read QB. He goes through progressions all the time. The turnovers are an issue. I believe that can be fixed.

He is also said to be: (1) a good leader; (2) a hard worker; (3) cool under pressure; and (4) a clutch player.

Yes, from all I have read, his intangibles are off the charts.

In the limited viewing I've had, I thought he was pretty sloppy with the ball. From a pure QB position, I prefer Rosen, but his recent concussion history scares me.

If we draft him, i dont want to see him start for a long time. He needs a lot of work. Turnovers, bad reads, ect. Needs to clean up a bunch.

If they feel like he is the guy, ok. Make him that guy. Can't F this one up.

I prefer Rosen as well, but the injury history scares me. Either one will be fine imo.

Would you sign up for a QB that would play for a long time, be considered real good and help us get to two SBs? I'll sign up for that right now.

He is not a one read QB by the way. USC runs a Pro-Style offense, always have.

Whoever you heard that from is an idiot, and you should consider not taking what they say under advisement moving forward.

I think he will need a year to sit no doubt. And I dont think he needs as much work as most say. There is a whole lot more good than bad to him. The turnovers are an issue but Wentz has the same issue of being sloppy with the ball. Wentz has fumbled 23 times in 29 games. Get him with a good QB coach and OC, and I think he will shine.

Agreed, besides Rosen, Darnold does the most work in going through progressions and reading the defense as any QB in the draft. RG3 was a 1 read guy. Darnold is nowhere close to that.

Maybe. I also don't trust USC QBs. Last year at this time I was geeked about Darnold (and Barkley). This season made me question it though. Did he believe the hype and not put the work in? Or did he just truly regress to what he is? Or was it just a bad year?

He is only 20 though. So is Rosen though.

He started out very slow. If you watch his progression throughout the year, he improved and started taking better care of the ball. And I have to say I dont think his game vs Ohio State was as bad as most. He made some real bad plays no doubt, but there were so many splash plays and it was clear USC was completely over matched talent wise. I think Darnold is going to be very good, just not right away.

If you can promise me that we would have a defense that would hold the best offense ever to 14 points, sign me up. If you can also promise me that we can have a defense that would hold imo the best QB to 31 points in two super bowls. Sigh me up!
