GIANTS' GM JERRY REESE SAYS CONTRACT EXTENSION FOR OSI UMENYIORA "COULD HAPPEN"

"Giants general manager Jerry Reese left the door open to the possibility of
working out a long-term contract extension for defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

"We’ve got a lot to talk about, so it could happen," Reese said today at the
NFL Scouting Combine. "But right now, we have a lot of issues to look at, so
we've just got to formulate a good game plan and see what we can get done."

Umenyiora is under contract with the Giants through 2012 but has expressed
frustrations through the course of the extension he signed back in 2005. He is
due to earn a base salary of $3.975 million in 2012.

Reese said he has not yet met with Umenyiora or his representatives since the
season ended but him not ruling out working on an extension is news.

"We are open to everything right now," Reese said. "But we don't know what we
can do yet. We don't even know what the cap number is going to be. There are a
lot of issues that we have to fix and address. So we will see what will happen,
    though."

The Giants are reportedly tight in cap space, and Reese acknowledged, "we
    have some work to do."

Umenyiora said on Sirius XM's MadDog Radio yesterday that money is the only
issue in whether or not he would stay with the Giants. He indicated he would
take less money to stay with the team.

"You know whats so funny?" Umenyiora said. "If it came down to me taking less
    to stay here, I would."

Reese said the situation with Umenyiora is not "pressing" but rather part of
    "offseason business."

    * * *

Reese said "there have to be some decisions made soon" with respect to RB
Brandon Jacobs' future with the team. Jacobs is owed $4.9 million this season,
and a $500,000 roster bonus is due next month.

Jacobs has said he's open to restructuring his contract, but Reese declined
    to get into specifics.

"We’ll see," he said. "It’s not fair to talk to the media about people’s
contracts. But we’ll see what happens."

    * * *

Reese did not deny a report that negotiations between the Giants and Mario
Manningham have not gone well, so the receiver is set to hit the open market.

"I don't think it's fair to frame what the odds are on (him being back),"
Reese said. "He's a good football player and obviously players, when free agency
comes around for them, they want to make as much money as possible. We'll see
how it unfolds, but he is a good football player. We're glad he's been a Giant
for us and his contributions are outstanding for us in the time he's been
    here."

The thing that never ceases to amaze me is that Osi Umenyora got the contract he demanded. He wanted the long term money and he got it. He is crieing as if he is in the poor house or something. The guy shows up to play when he wants to show up to play.

I would like for NY Giants to keep him but I understand if they don’t want to get robbed by him. There are better options out there for the money he is asking.

Dude do you even bother to read anything? He just said he may take less to play here. He played like a maniac after he got healthy this year. This coming from a guy who is definatly NOT the biggest Osi fan. only because I would rather have someone who played the run better but FOR WHAT OSI IS HE IS A BEAST.
I don't want the Giants to over pay him either but I also understand he is reaching his last real contract maybe and he shouldn't get robbed by the Giants either.

Manningham hitting free agency was inevitable and even Reese knew that as well.

By "less" money, Osi is refering to less thanwhat heWANTED to get not what he's currently making........just to be clear.... but it is an encouraging sign that Osi is willing to back off the rhetoric and is open to negotiation. I think he wants to retire a Giant.

Right now we have other fish to fry before we can even THINK about paying someone who is still under contract.

Mario leaving was inevitable. Thanks MM.......You will be forever remembered for your contribution on the Giants road to SB 46, and forever lauded the truly game winning catch!!!................unless you go to the Eagles or Cowboys......then all bets are off.

I stopped fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

            Thanks Roanoke.

Am I missing something here? Osi is under contract which will not expire until next year. In the meantime, in the immediate future the Giants have a gaping hole at TE courtesy of SB injuries, 24 hitting FA March 13th, Combine, Draft, yada, yada. This just seems to be a verbal dance that wouldn't even be discussed if Osi hadn't commented to the media.

              Thanks RF.

I am not a capologist but I think this makes sense. Under his contract for next year Osi is due $3.9M which is probably higher than he is worth with his age, tendency for injuries and limitations against the run. It is also a heavy hit on our cap. A restructure for more years could bring his salary for next year down with a higher guarantee that is paid out over a longer term, keeping Osi here asa great backup pass rushing specialistwhile giving JR wiggle room inside the cap. I like it.

No one remembers who came in second.

Ah so. Thanks jomo. So then this would increase the urgency to get this done? What would be the timeframe/deadline to get a restructure done before the provisions for the new year kick in?

The guy has maybe 2 or 3 good years left. Giants have to keep that in mind!
Players come and go on the Free Agency Merry-Go-Round, but the N.Y. Giants will always be here!

MM going is not the end of the world, the players on the Giants D really like OSI more than the fans do!!! If they sign OSI for say 3 more years I think it would be good for both!

[/quote]I think wherever possible they try to get the heavy lifting out of the way before free agency and the draft. Otherwise you don't know who's going to stick and at what price.

As long as we have the $ to keep JPP here for life, I'm good with it.

Osi should not want to leave since he has others to help him. If he goes somewhere else, he may be the only big play player on the line and he may do nothing but fail.
