GIANTS RE-SIGN JAKE BALLARD AND BRUCE JOHNSON, ELI MANNING RESTRUCTURES CONTRACT

    "The New York
    Giants
    have re-signed both cornerback Bruce
    Johnson
    and tight end Jake
    Ballard
    , per NFLPA records.

According to the records filed at the NFLPA, Ballard has been re-signed for
    one-year and $540,000, while Johnson signed a similar one-year, $540,000 tender.
Both players were exclusive rights free agents.

Under the rules of the CBA, all exclusive rights free agents must re-sign
with their team if an offer is made.

    Eli
    Manning
    restructures contract.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports Eli
    Manning
restructured his contract. His 2012 salary drops from $10.75 million to $1.75 million,
and his overall cap hit drops to $9.6 million – nearly $7 million less than what
it was. There is $9 million guaranteed that will be spread out over the
    remainder of his deal.

ELI RESTRUCTURES, CREATES CAP ROOM FOR GIANTS

Excerpt: "A little more than a month after Eli Manning helped the Giants to the Super
Bowl championship, he’s helped them in their attempt to keep the champs
    together.

The two-time Super Bowl MVP agreed to a sizeable, but simple,
restructuring of his contract which clears approximately $6.75 million in salary
cap space for the Giants in 2012. Manning doesn’t lose any money. He simply gets
more of his money. But the help was huge for a team that had been currently
projected to be over the expected 2012 cap.

    According to two sources who
saw the terms of the restructuring, Manning was due a salary of $10.75 million
in 2012. The Giants converted $9 million of that into a guarantee, lowering his
base salary to $1.75 million. It’s not known if they paid him the money up front
(like a signing bonus) or simply guaranteed it. Either way, he still gets all
$10.75 million, but for salary cap purposes the team is now able to spread $9
million of it over the final four seasons of his contract.

    That means,
instead of counting for $16.35 million against the 2012 salary cap, Manning now
counts for just $9.6 million. However, it increases his cap number by $2.25
million in each of the final three years of his deal.

    The actual
salaries of Manning’s final three seasons appear to be untouched. He’s still
scheduled to make $13 million in 2013, $15.15 million in 2014 and $17 million in
2015, just in base salaries alone. His cap numbers for those years are now
    $20.85 million (in 2013), $20.4 million (in 2014) and $19.75 million (in
    2015).

It’s not immediately clear how far under the salary cap the
Giants are, in part because the NFL still hasn’t released the official salary
cap numbers for 2012. They had been estimated to be anywhere from $2-9 million
over the projected cap, though that was before they re-signed WR Domenik Hixon
(one year, $615,000) and placed the “franchise tag” on P Steve Weatherford (one
    year, approximately $2.6 million).

The Giants may still have some
restructuring to do to get far enough under the cap to do anything in free
agency. One easy way to get under would be to cut running back Brandon Jacobs,
which would be a cap savings of $4.9 million. He will be cut before free agency
begins on Tuesday at 4 p.m., unless he agrees to a major paycut before then." Read more...

The less CAP room you have, the more challenging the GM's job is. Reese has really done a great job acquiring talent we need, including developing players not quite ready for prime time.

A free agent must resign doesn't sound like a free agent to me.
