GIANTS REACH OUT TO LINEBACKER CHASE BLACKBURN

"Contrary to earlier reports that the team would not look to re-sign Chase
    Blackburn
, the New York Giants reached out to the linebacker on Wednesday as their primary
    option, Jonathan
    Goff
, was in Cleveland visiting with the Browns.

A source told Jeff Roberts of The Record that while Blackburn "is pursuing
other options," he remains "very much interested" in a potential return to Big Blue.

The team has strongly maintained that their primary goal is to re-sign Goff
and have him start at middle linebacker next season, so this could merely be a
power-play aimed at putting pressure on him. However, Blackburn is a solid
secondary option with the market for middle linebackers dwindling (Stephen
Tulloch recently re-signed with the Detroit Lions).

After being signed as a street free agent last season, Blackburn collected 26
tackles and one interception in five regular season games. He added an
additional 26 tackles and one huge interception (Super Bowl XLVI) in the
playoffs. Goff, meanwhile, spend the season rehabbing after tearing his ACL in
    early September."

he really played well and was always a good STer in the event we end up signing and starting Goff, but obviously there are only so many roster spots and we want to be able to sign all or most of our draft picks

very good backup plan if goff goes elsewhere, he could even be potentially more cost effective towards the cap, and signing him doesnt limit us taking a mlb in the draft where as signing goff to some sort of deal could have allowed the giants to believe their mlb issue would be resolved

Dude...seriously, if this comes to pass, if Goff sign elsewhere, and we bring back Chase, there are some people on this board that need to line up and eat some big time CROW!

This would be a good pick up for special teams and a back up LB, give Mark Herzlich a chance at the position.

Yes, but what matters is who comes out of camp as the starter

I think if this happens, the Nickel package becomes our default defense.
I don't always root for the Cowboys but when I do I wear my pink Jessica Simpson edition Romo jersey. (yes I lost a bet)

BECAUSE....the contiuously diss Chase and what he has and can do for the team. Is he a MLB on caliber with Patrick Willis.......No. Can he run our defense competently and make stops......YES. Should we try and get young there...yeah sure, got no problem there. My beef is that soooo many people thought we would go Goff over Chase, and that we shouldn't even give Chase a shot, because Goff was a shoe in....

no i know, but this just goes back a few weeks to when me and burier were debating about Blackburn. He said the only reason he was a starter was because of injury, which wasn't true. He then said that Chase shouldn't of been considered our starting LBers last year even though he started more games at MLB than anybody else for us and finished the season of a superbowl win as our starter...

He then said he wouldn't come into camp as a starter this year even if we did sign him, which we won't

I agreed with him that we wouldn't sign Chase if we signed Goff... but this was like a 10 page debate

I still don't get this, since it appears that they were right that Goff was the team's first choice and that they are looking to CB now only because it looks like Goff could go elsewhere . . . . what am I missing here?

what we will run on defense has more to do with who we are playing, what they like to do, what is their tendencies, and what package they have on the field.

Goff will be the starting MLB if they sign him, that hasn't changed. Blackburn, at the moment, is an insurance policy. It's nothing more than a business strategy right now.
