GIANTS' JERRY REESE DISCUSSES OFF-SEASON ISSUES; EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER MARVIN AUSTIN

"Amidst the craziness around the NFL this March, the Super Bowl Champion New York
    Giants
are continuing to fly below the radar, strategizing about a best plan
to field the best team possible next season. Leading this charge is General
    Manager, Jerry
    Reese
, who has already lead the team to two Super Bowl
Championships and earned the unwavering respect from Giants fans.

Ralph Vacchiano reports via his Twitter handle that
Reese will appear on SiriusXM later today and discuss several issues facing the
    Giants this off-season.

When asked about who the Giants would like to start at middle linebacker,
Reese simply stated, “I’m not sure.” However, per Vacchiano:

Reese then mentioned three "interesting candidates for that job": Mark
    Herzlich
    , Greg
    Jones
    and … Michael
    Boley
    . #NYG

Similar to the off-season after Super Bowl 42, the Giants are dealing with
the departure of several key free agents, most notably, cornerback Aaron
    Ross
    and wide receiver, Mario
    Manningham
. However, Reese took the bottom line, reality
    perspective, stating:

"The salary cap rules the world. If you have a lot of good players you just
    can’t retain them all."

But don't think that the Giants are necessarily finished in the free agency
market. While they have not made too many moves (largely due to a tight budget),
Reese alluded to some potential for some moves leading up to the draft,
    explaining:

"There’s still some things to do in free agency for us, I think. We’ve just
got to kind of slow-play it a little bit and see who’s out there and what’s
available for us and what our needs are as we continue the offseason process,
and kind of look down the road and see what the draft’s going to bring for us,
    see what’s available there."

Reese also shared some rather disconcerting news about defensive tackle,
    Marvin
    Austin
. While most fans who know about Austin are aware that he has
not seen the field in some time, hearing this kind of feedback from Reese is
both worrying and a call-to-action for the tackle. Reese elaborated:

    Jerry
    Reese
    on DT Marvin
    Austin
: "We’re worried about him a little bit. He hasn’t played in such a
long time . … This offseason is going to be big for him to get going again and
get acclimated to playing football and playing at this level, which is going to be
shocking to him because he hasn’t played in such a long time. To go out in there
and tussle with those big guys, it’s going to be tougher than you think it is. …
We hope he can get in there and give us a good rotation
    inside.”

The Giants are still often commended as one of the best run teams when it
comes to "creating and staying with a roster gameplan. There have been difficult
decisions thus far this off-season and there will undoubtedly be more to come,
but fans can rest-assured that they are in the highly capable hands of Jerry
    Reese
    ."

It's great we have a regular off-season this year. I trust Marvin will appear at every organized event to get himself into football condition.

I can't imagine Austin contributing much less than Joseph did his first year. He will be soaking in a lot this year and maybe see some field time.

          Boley at MLB?

Is Reese interested in Zach Brown?

Brown, Boley, Williams would be superb against the pass, all can blitz and will be above average against the run.

Yea you are right there. But why would he mention Boley at MLB whose is nowhere near as aggressive against the run an MLB should be? We brought him in to cover TEs not be the run stopper.

Because Boley already makes the defensive adjustments and moving him to MLB would allow J. Will to get on the field in our base defense. Boley already also plays the MLB role in our nickle and dime packages.

I agree, he isn't very strong in tackling or instincts. Even lacks physicality typically seen at LB or even SS position. IMO!

I think its JR's way of saying "LB's are not important". Plus Boley is the signal caller regardless of where he is playing, it only makes more sense to put the signal caller in the middle, I suppose.

Also, he might be thinking of moving JWill to SAM, Boley as MIKE(lol) and Herzlich(or Jones) in as WILL.

I'm hoping Austin can come in this year and get back into football shape. He does have youth on his side and it's not like he was injured for two years. One year was due to a college suspension but he was staying in shape and did play some pre season last year.

We need some DT depth. We need a good interior to shield our MIKE backer a bit.

Amobi Okoye would be a nice option if he doesn't sign with the Bengals. He is a solid 3T, and is still pretty young.

I've been saying for a while that we will go DT at some point of the draft. Devon Still was a name I used to mention, and he definitely looks like a possibility. Possibly Brockers if his combine dropped him far enough.

if Austin appears to be limited, I'd love for them to shore up the interior DLine, then the LBs etc

Or is it his way of believing in his draft choices. Boley did a good job last season calling the signals and he seems to be a good mentor for younger players.

I think Mark Herzlich, is going to surprise this year. The guy was a stud in college and looked great against the run in his one start. He'll need to improve on pass coverage though to be a starter.

                              I agree.....

I also wouldnt read too much into JR comments...I think Reese may just be using the media to motivate the young man and to temper fans expectations because he has sat for so long.
