GIANTS' HAKEEM NICKS HOPES TO BE READY FOR START OF TRAINING CAMP

"Tom Coughlin was standing about half a football field away when Hakeem Nicks ran
a simple hook route without defenders, or "on air," and pulled up lame during
the Giants' second organized team activity last Thursday.

"Oh, he rolled his ankle over," Coughlin thought as his star wide receiver
    hobbled meekly.

Fellow wide receiver Domenik Hixon, also participating in the drill, said he
assumed the same. But within minutes, after Nicks had his right foot wrapped and
was taken off the field, news came that he had broken the fifth metatarsal in
    his right foot.

The next day Nicks was in Charlotte undergoing surgery and the team estimates
he will be out around 12 weeks. That timetable would mean a return in mid-August
    during training camp.

Coughlin said he spoke to Nicks Sunday night and the fourth-year receiver is
optimistic -- so much so that he hopes to be ready for the start of training
    camp on July 26.

"'I'll be back for training camp' were his final words," Coughlin said today
at the annual Giants Foundation golf outing at Westchester Country Club to
benefit youth-related charities in the Tri-state area. "And I said, 'OK, well I
would accept it if it was maybe a day or two after the start of camp, that'd be
fine.' But I really appreciated his optimism and the fact that he was doing
    everything he possibly could."

Coughlin said Nicks' foot is in a cast, elevated, and "pretty much
    pain-free."

The timetable for such an injury varies case-by-case to some degree. Hixon,
who broke the same bone when he was training for the combine out of college,
said it takes about three months. Prince Amukamara suffered the injury during
the first week of training camp last August and was out for about 15 weeks.

The team is confident that it will be a matter of how much of training camp
Nicks misses and not whether he'll be back in time for the Sept. 5 season opener
against Dallas. Despite not being able to run, there are various techniques to
keep in shape while avoiding stress on the foot.

"He stays in shape," Hixon said. "It's not going to be an in-shape thing.
It's just a matter of time. You can't speed up time."

Nicks' injury leaves the Giants with 10 wide receivers on the roster and
Coughlin said the team isn't looking to add a veteran wideout to the mix – and
that includes former Giant Plaxico Buress.

"No," Coughlin mouthed as he shook his head when asked if the team was
considering bringing the troubled veteran back.

Instead, they'll give the extra reps to those already on the roster.

"[We'll] look for the next Victor Cruz," Coughlin said. "How's that one?"

Candidates include Hixon, who has missed the last two seasons with ACL tears,
and Rueben Randle, whose surprised drop to the end of the second round is now
more than just a luxury pick for the Giants. But for the rookie out of LSU, his
approach won't alter in Nicks' absence.

"Just continue to go out there do what you been doing," Randle said. "It's
still football at the end of the day. Just keep learning. It's a learning
process for me each and every day so as long as I keep going out there and
getting better at practice and getting more reps."

Considering that nicks got injured, things worked out pretty much as positive as possible. The timing of the injury and time he will miss arent going to hurt the giants imo. But the reps that the other wrs will get will help us.

Six weeks isnt impossible either, depends on a bunch of things...but twelve weeks doesnt hurt us either imo

It will give some guys opportunities to get first team reps they might not have gotten this year.

Yeah, to me, Nix is the key to this offense---just a great under-rated player. I do hope he has a full recovery and is back on the field for the beginning of the season.

He has shown that he gets on the field sooner than expected after being injured. He is a 4 year veteran, he has the playbook down and and long as he stays in good shape he shoild be fine by the start of the season.

No need to rush back to the start o training camp. As long as he can get in the last 2 pre season games to shake some rust I'd be confident that he would still be a dangerous WR.

              Great news
Football has been very, very good to us.
After losing seasons 2013-15, the giants put up 11 wins in 16.. they are on way Back
But for now we can console ourselves with this fact-

              # of Super Bowl victories since 1985:

1-Chicago, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Seattle
              2-Washington, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Baltimore
              3-San Francisco, Dallas, Denver
              4-New York Giants!!!
              5-NE
Let's make it 5 in 2016 so we can be on a LINE NE again!!!

He'll be ready to pedal the stationary bike along with the rest of our injured players and likely OSI (I know that is a surprise as well!)

I am seriously intrigued by what Randle will bring to this team and am anxious to go to Albany to see how he does! I get a good vibe from this acquisition...if he brings it at a slight level higher than Manningham with some consistancy, this offense will be disgusting!!!.....Granted, for it to be truely disgusting we need to rank significantly higher than dead last in the run game!
