GIANTS' VICTOR CRUZ; "I AM ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE THAT CHIP ON MY SHOULDER"

    "New York
    Giants wide receiver Victor
    Cruz
has had a tumultuous career up to this point. After not receiving a
Division 1 scholarship offer out of high school, the Patterson, N.J. native went
on to play at UMass. Cruz did not see significant playing time until his Junior
year, when he garnered Colonial Athletic Association All-Conference honors.
After college, Cruz was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York
Giants. He suffered through an injury riddled rookie year; however, last season
he went on to break the Giants single-season record for receiving yards, while
helping Big Blue secure its fourth Super
    Bowl
    Championship.

    Although Victor
    Cruz
is now considered an elite NFL wide receiver, he does not plan to forget where
he came from and how many obstacles he had to overcome to achieve the success he
has earned. While speaking atWilliam and Mary’s Colonial All-Pro Camp, Cruz
    stated the following:

“To be from a small town in Jersey, play at UMASS and have to make an NFL team and
then become a catalyst in the fourth Super
    Bowl
in team history, it’s just an amazing feeling that I’m glad to be a
part of. I’m always going to have that chip on my shoulder. The NFL seemed kind
of far-fetched at that point," Cruz said.

For the 2012 New York Giants, it is beyond essential that Cruz keep
playing with the same drive and intensity that we saw from him last season. With
    veteran Hakeem
    Nicks
' durability issues, Cruz will be heavily relied upon to be a key
    contributor to the offense.

However, ever since Cruz helped lead the Giants to their 2011 Super
    Bowl
Victory, he has developed his own fashion line and also has a book
coming out later this summer. It would be easy for one to say that his focus has
meandered away from the football field and into other ventures throughout this
    offseason.

Cruz is a young, talented athlete that is living his life in the spotlight,
so it would be hard to expect anything else from him. Let's just hope that by
the time training camp comes around, number 80 will be ready to put all his
offseason endeavors behind him and help the Giants defend their Super
    Bowl
    title."

having the drive and will to win and succeed is paramount in sports...cruz strikes me as being a guy who will never lose that drive with the whole college/UDFA/coming out of nowhere part of his life.

this guy could be something special. hopefully the spotlight doesnt get too bright...doesnt seem like it would. that other stuff outsidde of football is him being smart and securing money for himself bc he isnt getting paid top dollar yet. clothing line and book money is better than him going to clubs and gambling or other things that hinder athletes...

If you have talent and a QB like Eli who has a knack for getting the ball to you...you realize this and be patient. His payday will come. If he leaves, he may get paid but for how long?

A pattern is starting for receivers making a splash with Eli throwing to them and then they parlay that into a bigger contract somewhere else. It may or may not work out, but at least they are getting paid now...I think.

I'm not concerned that VC has developed interests outside of football. I believe (or hope) that he is smart enough to compartmentalize those other things and not lose his football concentration. In the first place, the success of the other ventures is going to hinge on the recognition he gets from football - at least for the first few years. If he busts on the field and his name recognition fades, his clothing line will likely fizzle also. I figure he knows all that.

How much of a chance do you think he's a flash in the pan?

I don't think he's a flash personally, he has obvious talent that showed preseason two years ago and then every single game last year when he was asked to step in for the injured D.Hixon. Will his production dip? I'm sure of it, teams will key in on him especially with Nicks somewhat less than 100% but he will still be a top threat. You don't just lose that kind of skill and talent

Cruz had his "Young Whales" fashion line last season. That's nothing new.

Him NOT doing his Salsa routine in the Saints blowout last year plainly illustrated how level-headed and humble this kid is. The sky is the limit.

Re: GIANTS' VICTOR CRUZ; "I AM ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE THAT CHIP ON MY SHOULDER"

there is no way in hell cruz will be a flash in the pan. he may never put up numbers like he did last year again, but that will be due to teams doubling him and leaving other guys 1 on 1 which will do nothing but help the team as a whole.

it's not hard to see that cruz is an intelligent, humble, hard working guy. im very confident he will continue to be a great receiver for many years to come. i just hope it's in a big blue uniform.

the main reason i think he's had so much success besides his obvious physical talents, is that he is a hard worker, a student of the game.

you can see his focus in the huddle listening to the play from eli, or on the sidelines listening to advice from gilbride or other coaches/players. he comes off as very intelligent which is why i think he had so much success in our option offense. he has a great feel for the game and reads defensive coverages well. eli recognized that along with his ball skills early in the year and gained huge trust in him which is why he always knew he would get open for him.

you cannot defend option routes if they are executed properly which is why cruz is such a difficult guy to stop, especially if you're trying to do it one on one.

like i said, if cruz's numbers drop off a little it will be due to other guys having more opportunities, not because he "fell off" or something like that.

the only thing that can stop cruz imo is injury or god forbid some freak accident outside of football. if he's suited up between the lines on sundays he's gonna continue to terrorize secondarys for years to come.

I think it's more likely he has a good season than he flames out.
