GIANTS' GAMEDAY: GIANTS NEED A CORNERBACK TO STEP UP WITH PRINCE AMUKAMARA INJURED

    Excerpt: "Three positions to watch
Wide receiverIt looks like Hakeem Nicks will get his first live action of the preseason tonight after coming off the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list because of the broken right foot he suffered on May 24. Nicks’ reps at practice have increased steadily since his return and so has his play. On Sunday, he was able to make a catch in front of cornerback Michael Coe, pivot and accelerate upfield without a hitch. Then there’s the battle for the No. 3 wide receiver spot. Ramses Barden made his case for it last week with three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, but it’s still up for grabs." Read more...

GIANTS' DEPTH AT LINEBACKER A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE AS CUT DOWN DAY APPROACHES

Excerpt: "Spencer Paysinger had zoned out. He knows he shouldn’t have, but when Tom Coughlin began announcing the Giants’ three captains for last Friday’s game against the Chicago Bears, he allowed himself to wonder: “What if he said Paysinger?”

It was a longshot, a second-year undrafted linebacker receiving such an honor for the third — and most important — preseason game. But at the team hotel last Thursday night, Coughlin announced that David Diehl (offense), Mathias Kiwanuka (defense) and Paysinger (special teams) were the team captains for the next night." GIANTS' HOT TOPIC: SHOULD HAKEEM NICKS PLAY IN THE FINAL PRESEASON GAME?

Excerpt: "Hakeem Nicks is ready to play.

The Giants' No. 1 wide receiver is coming off a broken foot, and has been practicing hard. He said he felt he was ready to play Wednesday in the preseason finale against the Patriots. The question, though, is whether he should?" Read more...

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN THE FINAL PRE-SEASON GAME

Excerpt: "Tom Coughlin said that he might play his starters tonight, though if he does it’s hard to imagine they’ll last more than a series. The regular-season opener is now just eight days away and the last thing he wants is to suffer a serious injury in an otherwise meaningless and unnecessary game.
So if you want to see the starters, tune in early. If they’re in at all, they might be out by the first commercial break. This final preseason game – laughingly billed by the NFL Network as a “Super Bowl rematch” – is mostly about players near the bottom of the roster.

This is their last chance to impress. This is their last chance to make the team.

So who and what should you be watching tonight? Well, first of all I’d recommend you stay home, change the channel and watch anything else. But if you must, here are five things you might want to keep your eye on:" Read more...

GIANTS' LB SPENCER PAYSINGER WISHES THE BEST FOR HIS LINEBACKER BUDDIES AS FINAL CUTS NEAR

Excerpt: "Spencer Paysinger still harbors the slightest bit of hope. It’s a longshot, but the Giants’ second-year linebacker has seen it happen before.

For the second straight year, Paysinger is one of four sophomore linebackers fighting to stick on the 53-man roster. Last year, all four players — Paysinger, Greg Jones, Mark Herzlich and Jacquian Williams — made it. And this year, Paysinger says, it could happen again.

“Technically, that’s the norm for me,” he says. “I’ve only been here two years. Last year, they kept us. That’s all I know is all four of us being here.”

ROSTER CHOICES REMAIN AS GIANTS FINISH PRESEASON AGAINST PATRIOTS

    Excerpt: "
The thousands upon thousands of empty gray seats tonight at MetLife Stadium will bear witness to what the paying customers think about preseason games in general and especially the most revolting one of them all — preseason game No. 4.

If you blink, you’ll miss the Giants starters in their cameo appearance on the field tonight and Patriots coach Bill Belichick might actually cover Tom Brady in protective bubble wrap and gently place him on the bench for the entire evening.

Money must be raked in, though, and evaluations must be made for roster spots 50, 51, 52 and 53. The Giants already have a pretty firm handle on how their team will be comprised, but with the final cut-down set for Friday, it is judgment day for several players on the fringe." Read more...

AHMAD BRADSHAW, DAVID WILSON COULD BE INSIDE/OUTSIDE COMBO FOR GIANTS

    Excerpt: "
Perhaps the Giants are forming their own Mr. Inside/Mr. Outside combo.

Rookie running back David Wilson has brought to the backfield exactly what the Giants envisioned as far as an injection of speed and an ability to run off-tackle. The finer points of running between-the-tackles will be slower to develop for the 5-foot-9, 205-pound Wilson. That’s where the (barely) bigger Ahmad Bradshaw (all 5-foot-10 and 214 pounds of him) comes in.

“What happened the other day was [Wilson] was able to get outside and in so doing helped a whole schematic approach to it,’’ coach Tom Coughlin said. “If we can get a guy to get outside, maybe that will give us some opportunities up inside and hopefully that’s the direction we’re going. We’ll have a better mixture as we get going in terms of the ability of going inside and outside.’’ Read more...

DAVID DOUGLAS, ADRIAN TRACY ON THE BUBBLE AS FINAL CUTS LOOM FOR GIANTS

    Excerpt: "
The question was a simple one: "Have you done enough?"

David Douglas insists not yet, which is why he can't wait to step inside MetLife Stadium for tonight's preseason finale against the Patriots with one last chance to show the Giants he belongs on the team.

Adrian Tracy believes he already has, at least that is the hope, considering the third-year defensive end likely will not be suiting up because of a sore hamstring he still is nursing.

"I'm not sure you ever feel completely satisfied that you've done enough, but there has to be a level of confidence that you have," Tracy said. "Out of the chances you receive, you'd better do everything you can to make the most of them."

Tracy and Douglas have been two of the brightest albeit unexpected preseason stars for the Giants, making plays and gaining plenty of attention while also garnering raves from teammates and the coaching staff, most notably coach Tom Coughlin." Read more...

CORNERBACKS WILL BE UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT AS GIANTS TAKE ON THE PATRIOTS

Excerpt: "In an eerily similar fashion to the New York Giants tumultuous 2011 preseason, the team has already lost multiple key contributors to the defensive backfield due to injury. With Terrell Thomas' re-aggravated ACL injury, along with Prince Amukamara's high ankle sprain, Big Blue has some serious questions to answer tonight in their final preseason bout with theNew England Patriots. Not only is there no starter set in stone to take the field alongside Corey Webster next Wednesday against Dallas, but there is no defined nickel cornerback either." Read more...

GIANTS' VS PATRIOTS: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Excerpt: "The fourth and final preseason game is pretty much as bad as it gets: the starters hardly play, while they do you're just praying they don't get hurt and the looming season opener (the following Wednesday, September 5th against the Dallas Cowboys, in case you forgot) combine to make the entire silly exercise even more excruciating.

But that doesn't mean we take a break around here at G101. No coasting into the regular season. Here's what we're watching for against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots." Read more...

GIANTS VS. PATRIOTS, WHAT TO WATCH

    Excerpt: "
Starters won't play much in the New York Giants final preseason game of 2012, which is Wednesday night at MetLife Stadium against the New England Patriots (7 p.m. ET, NFL Network). That, however, does not mean there won't intriguing things to watch during the evening (if you are lucky enough to have NFLN, that is).

Here is a look at some of the things worth paying attention to." Read more...

    GIANTS VS. PATRIOTS: GAME PREVIEW

    Excerpt: "
Pre-season Game 4 is the most meaningless of games. Escaping without injury, and competition for a couple of low-level roster spots are typically its themes. The Giants have many injured players both coming and going. As many of them as possible need to get on the field if only to answer some questions, though we suspect many of them won’t be able to go.

    ROSTER ANALYSIS" OFFENSIVE PROJECTIONS

Excerpt: "The final preseason game against the Patriots is Wednesday night. This is a final chance for bubble players to impress the coaching staff. With the Giants cutting their roster down from 75 to 53 on Friday, let's take a look at the offense, position-by-position, and who might stay or go.

I'll take my stab at who I think will make it and who's on the bubble. Of course, some big individual performances and injuries could always change things. I'll tackle defense and special teams tomorrow. " Read more...

A player cannot participate on the Practice Squad for more than three seasons.

September 4 -- Deadline at 4:00 p.m., New York time, for all NFL Player Contracts, Practice Player Contracts, tender offers, and miscellaneous amounts to fit within each club's 2012 Salary Cap, in anticipation of the midnight expiration of the Top 51 Rule.
