GIANTS WORK OUT 19 PLAYERS ON OFF DAY, SIGN TWO TO PRACTICE SQUAD

Excerpt: "The Giants players are off today and for the weekend, but the team conducted workouts at its practice facility this morning.

A total of 19 players worked out, including three veteran quarterbacks (Josh McCown, Stephen McGee and Brian Hoyer), five defensive backs and receiver Jordan Shipley, according to a person with knowledge of the workouts. That person requested anonymity because the team does not announce private workouts." Read more...

TOM COUGLIN, GIANTS DEDICATED TO PRODUICE BETTER GROUND GAME IN WEEK 2

    Excerpt: "
Tom Coughlin almost sounded envious. The more the Giants’ coach spoke about Wednesday’s loss to the Cowboys, the more he raved about Dallas’ running game.

“They got just enough run yardage, and then, in the second half they seemed to be when the piles were unfolded, they were going forward,” he said of the Cowboys, who rolled up 143 yards on the ground. “I just think it gives you so much more.”

Coughlin had expected his own rushing attack to come through. One year after finishing dead last in the NFL in rushing yards, the Giants promised improvement. “Definitely,” Ahmad Bradshaw vowed in training camp." Read more...

GIANTS ADD TWO TO PRACTICE SQUAD

    Excerpt: "
The Giants held a work out for 19 players on Friday at several different positions and two of them were signed to their practice squad.

According to NFL sources, the Giants signed both offensive lineman Scott Wedige and cornerback Terrence Frederick." Read more...

A LOOK BACK AT A BAD OPENING NIGHT

    Excerpt: "
In the moments after the Giants lost their season opener to a division rival in a completely unexpected and disheartening play, here’s what I heard from a veteran, respected leader in the locker room.

“To go out there put that kind of performance out there is unacceptable to us,” the player said. “It’s unacceptable in every regard. We just continued to make the kind of mistakes that Coach Coughlin told us not to make. At some point we need to listen. For us, understanding what we represented and to do what we did out there today, it’s embarrassing.” Read more...

AROUND THE CORNER: ROOKIE HOSLEY MAY BE THE KEY TO SHORING UP THE GIANTS' DEFENSE

    Excerpt: "
No one carries less weight around the Giants than Jayron Hosley. But he is the one player who might be capable of tipping the scales in favor of a defense that looks as if there’s a rupture spewing pass completions all over leaky cornerbacks.

Now, no one is intimating that a 5-foot-10, 178-pound bite-size rookie is capable of making a seismic impact and rushing any player on the field before his time smacks of panic mode. The Giants are 0-1 and get to wring their hands during what essentially is a bye weekend. When they return to work on Monday, Michael Coe still will have an achy hamstring, Prince Amukamara still will be waiting for clearance to run on a high ankle sprain, Justin Tryon still will have been beaten badly by Miles Austin for a touchdown and by Kevin (Did anyone draft this guy in fantasy football?) Ogletree for the 13-yard third-down completion that sealed the deal on the Cowboys’ 24-17 party-bashing victory in the regular-season opener." Read more...

GIANTS ADD OL SCOTT WEDGIE, DB TERRANCE FREDERICK TO PRACTICE SQUAD

    Excerpt: "
After holding private workouts for 19 players today, the New York Giantshave signed center Scott Wedgie and defensive back Terrance Frederick to their practice squad.

Both players are rookies with no NFL experience .Wedgie is an undrafted free agent out Northern Illinois who spent training camp with the Arizona Cardinals. He was cut on the final day, when the rosters were trimmed from 75 to 53." Read more...

    GIANTS' DEPTH CHART TESTED EARLY

    Excerpt: "
It sure would give the impression as if every year the New York Giants’ depth chart is battle tested several games into the regular season. This year (in game one) it was (especially for the defense), yet again." Read more...

SHOULD GIANTS TRADE FOR ANOTHER CB?

    Excerpt: "
It's only week one. However, theNew York Giants defense looked lethargic in Wednesday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Not only did Big Blue give up 290 yards through the air, but the run defense gave up 143 yards on the ground.
Tony Romo looked like the best player on the field for much of the game, and the Giants failed to capitalize on whatever mistakes he did make. However, perhaps the most discouraging aspect of the loss was that Kevin Ogletree was wide open all night and made the difference in this game." Read more...

GIANTS WORKOUT QUARTERBACKS JOSH MCCOWN, STEPHEN MCGEE, AND BRIAN HOYER

    Excerpt: "
In addition to working out former Indianapolis Colts safety David Caldwell on Friday, Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledgerreports the New York Giants also hosted free agent quarterbacks Josh McCown, Stephen McGee and Brian Hoyer." Read more...

GIANTS WORK OUT FOR COLTS SAFETY DAVID CALDWELL

Excerpt: "Once a very deep position, the New York Giants are now struggling to find healthy defensive backs. Although cornerback Prince Amukamara is eyeing a week two return, that's no guarantee. And with Michael Coe dealing with ahamstring injury and safety Tyler Sash still suspended until week five, Big Blue held private workouts for a number of players on Friday, including former Indianapolis Colts safety David Caldwell." Excerpt: "
For the past couple of seasons I have given you the plus/minus numbers from nearly all New York Giantsgames. Again this season I am going to bring you game numbers from PFF for Giants games, but my hope is to bring them to you in a more fun, and more informative, way.

How I do this might be a work in progress. Let's try something a little different, though." Read more...

    GIANTS BRIDGE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Excerpt: "New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin made 'Build The Bridge' his theme for the 2012 NFL season. Meaning, he wants his team to build a nice, sturdy bridge from the 6-0 run to Super Bowl glory at the end of last season to another solid season and deep playoff run this time around.
Only, the Giants have not started along that path very well. Wednesday's season-opening 24-17 loss to theDallas Cowboys showed that Coughlin's bridge is either a) still under construction or b) not very sturdy. You choose the way that you want to look at it.Right now, I see it as a rickety bridge filled with holes, rotted boards, faulty footings, what have you. The bridge, from where I sit, looks way too much like the one the Giants tried to cross over on during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, and the 7-7 first 14 games of last season. You can get across, sure, but it's an adventure. A dangerous one at that, where crossing is far from guaranteed." Read more...

GIANTS - COWBOYS; HITS, MISSINGS AND MUSINGS

Excerpt: "There are a couple of ways you can look at the Giants’ 24-17 loss to the Cowboys.

You can sit there and wring your hands in worry, or you can see the silver lining in the clouds.

What silver lining, you might ask? The Giants, who last year and all off-season were the toast of the town, were taken down a peg by an opponent with whom many analysts have a love affair and who see as a potential division champion.

TEAM BY TEAM SALARY CAP SPACE AS OF 9/7/2012

    Excerpt: "
    [
    Editor's note
: Once the regular season begins, the salary-cap calculation changes. Instead of factoring in the 51 highest-paid players, the in-season cap takes into account all 53 players, the practice squad, and players on reserve lists. Here's the league's official version of the list, as of Friday, September 7.]

    Giants: $2.2 million.
