he was completing over 60% of his passes and throwing for over 3000 yds and 30 plus TDs in the days when you could mug receivers

    also in 14 game seasons
    And 12 game seasons!
Players come and go on the Free Agency Merry-Go-Round, but the N.Y. Giants will always be here!

Except that Namath has now oddly become an old woman . . . .

nothing new.....his propensity towards fur coats and nylons started way back in the '70's ..HA-HA !!

he was a player who just started to reach the age where he would start paying dividends, and then was shipped to the Black Hole. aside from the Super Bowl, he was a very good postseason player throughout his career. just very immature coming out of penn state.

Collins was a coward, much like Sanchez, and David Carr.........afraid of contact he would step in the bucket and throw off his back foot constantly

Both guys (Collins and Sanchez) have NFL all time Pick Six legacys.............Simms must have been disgusted watching Collins

easy to say when the likes of glenn parker, dusty zeigler, old lomas brown, jeff roehl were protecting him with one WR the entire time

Kerry Collins cowardice made me want to vomit...........I never once saw the guy step up in the pocket to avoid a rush........What an embarassment that guy was

His one highlight was Minny 41-0.........then he came out in the SB throwing Piks like he was getting a Pik bonus

The sad part was he replaced a guy who took us to the playoffs- Danny Kannel- a great game manager, and nifty runner. Its always about the arm......when as Parcells once said- 90% of the QB position is between the ears

and YA had only 10 td's vs 22 pics.i don't even think Dave Brown can match that.
hey , he did really great for a temp hired gun.....but he wasn't a Giant long enough to qualify.

there were only 14 teams (10 of which sucked) and 2 divisions.....the championship was the ONLY playoff game.
he choked all 3 times......3 times 1 and done. (Romo-esque)
even Kerry Collins had a few post season wins (as an old hired gun....and equatable to YA as such)

this guy was one of the games all-time famous-for-nothing legends. Kelly...Tarkenton....there is
a long list of QB's with equal or better stats that never won anything.
he probably isn't even in the top 10 best of the ones without a ring.

                    Marino,Tarkenton,Moon,Kelly.....etc.

                    for the record...
26th all-time passing yards. which is very respectable ,but not top 10.
18th all time in TD's (242) pretty good , but still not even close to top 10.

the only thing YA tittle was in the top 10 in was.....
                    9th all-time in interceptions thrown.
                    he threw 248 int's , but only 242 TD's

he actually threw 6 more pics than td's.
not even Favre can say that !!

in the '61 championship game we got shut out 37 to nothing - Bart Starr 37 YA 0
in the '62 championship game our only score was a defensive touchdown . YA 0
in the '63 championship game , YA threw 5 pics.

overrated , over-hyped ....regular season stats but big choker in the big games.
you obviously never saw him play

that "big choker" has a gold jacket .....thats how much he choked

go look up Gale Sayers stats.....and Lynn Swanns stats.....were they over hyped and overrated as well?

stats don't tell the whole story

anyways with only a 4 year body of work to be classified as an all=time greatest on
any team is just ludicrous .
when Payton retires in 2 years is he gonna be the greatest Bronco ?
                      get real.
it is not important how you feel about this ....not at all

it is important how the Maras feel about it

and they feel he is one of the best Giants of all time.......retired his number out of respect for what he did for this organization

and his bust sits in the Legacy room of the stadium....and it also sits in a little room Canton Ohio

so yours and my opinion = absolutely meaningless

                      Maras opinion = everything

opinion of his peers = everything

and the Peyton comparison is completely ridiculous

Peyton and Montana have championships in their previous cities......they are heroes there....icons

YA did not have that type of impact in SF

I respect your opinion my man

but if you saw the man play you would understand my stance more I assure you

my love for the player is not strictly romantic nostalgia .......I love him because he was one hell of a QB who brought an electric excitement into this city for years

when YA was in the game you always felt like you had a chance to win

                          very similar to Eli today

i can honestly say that Simms is the only Giants QB i ever saw play live.
and it was actually in the Astrodome....he ripped them a new ice-hole.
also 11 is the only signed jersey in my collection.
i could very well be biased in my assessments.

He broke the touchdown passing record one season if I remember right! Also the pass receivers could be hit and blocked until the ball was in the air. I wonder how many QB's today would have half the numbers with those rules?

All that said and done, I'm not sure today's game has better entertainment value than YA's era. The frequency and severity of today's injuries--the trend will kill the game. It's simple physics. Velocity x mass = force. Today a 250# guy can run like a sprinter. The collision impact is producing concussions at an alarming rate. It will be like watching movies without stars. Personally I question how far you can go with rules to protect players, Given that I don't see players giving up speed, and it doesn't look like they have equipment solutions, but conceivably you could introduce weight limits. Sound crazy. Go watch a Bud Wilkinson Oklahoma line block. They averaged about 185 pounds. Go watch any 330 pound NFL team block today. Compared to Wilkinson's teams, todays players just kind of get in each other's way.
