  • Showing Tireless Speed, Giants' David Wilson Gets Second Shot

Excerpt: "Thirteen games into the regular season, when many bruised and battered players must will themselves onto the field, the Giants hope the fresh legs of running back David Wilson can help carry them into the playoffs.

Wilson became an afterthought early this season after he fumbled on his second professional carry and struggled with pass protection. That led the coaching staff to look to capitalize on his speed and elusiveness more as a kick-return specialist than as a running back. But injuries to the top two backs, Ahmad Bradshaw (sprained knee, foot) and Andre Brown (broken leg), have thrust Wilson, the team’s first-round draft choice from Virginia Tech, front and center again.

Wilson displayed the explosiveness that many competitors appear to lack this deep in a season when he paced the Giants’ 52-27 romp over the New Orleans Saints last Sunday, emerging as the first player in N.F.L. history to amass at least 200 kick return yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game. He totaled 227 yards on kicks, including a 97-yard touchdown scamper; he also rushed for 100 yards and 2 more scores.

Wilson now sees an advantage to the months the Giants spent smoothing his rough edges and forcing him to learn from the sideline.

While other rookies may be hitting the proverbial wall, he said he feels as though his season has barely begun.

“I haven’t been in for my oil change yet,” he said. “I don’t need one.”

The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Wilson was clocked as fast as 4.29 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He appeared to play at a faster pace than the Saints and is confident he will remain something of a blur when the Giants visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and in the two remaining regular-season games after that. “I feel like I have been through, like, two college games,” he said. “I feel real fresh.” Read more...
