  • Giants' David Wilson And Rueben Randle Share The Spotlight

Excerpt: "David Wilson and Rueben Randle became close friends through it all; through the Giants offseason program, training camp and 17-week regular season that comprised their rookie campaigns and culminated with an odd mix of triumph and disappointment Sunday.

They fortified a bond as they traversed through the peaks and valleys of being rookies with great expectations on the defending Super Bowl champion in the nation's largest market. Wilson and Randle, playing for a head coach notoriously reluctant for playing rookies, were benched and criticized and provided flashes of brilliance in the span of four months.

So it was only fitting that on the final day of the regular season they demonstrated why the Giants front office decided to use their first two picks on offensive players for the first time since 2004 when a couple guys named Eli Manning and Chris Snee joined the team.
On Sunday, both started and combined to score the Giants' first three touchdowns in their 42-7 rout of the listless Eagles.

"We hangout a lot with each other off the field, so that's my main dog," said the running back Wilson, who had 15 carries for 75 yards. "For both of us to have big plays on our opening drive and him score a touchdown and him score another touchdown then I scored a touchdown, it was kind of tight."

Their impact was immediate. On the Giants' first play from scrimmage, Eli Manning handed the ball off to Wilson, starting for Ahmad Bradshaw, for a 10-yard gain. Wilson followed it with a 13-yard run. And two plays later, Manning's play-action fake to Wilson lured enough Eagles defenders to leave Randle open in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown. The score gave the Giants a lead for the first time in three weeks.

On the Giants' next drive, Manning connected with Randle again, this time from 38 yards out to make it 14-0. Manning's pass was underthrown, but Randle, covered by former All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, was able to adjust to the pass and make the play.

Randle finished with four receptions for 58 yards and became the first rookie Giant since Bobby Johnson in 1984 to catch two touchdowns in a single game.

"I was feeling pretty good with the game plan and understood what I had to do on the plays and just happy to be on the same page with Eli," said Randle, who started over the hindered Hakeem Nicks. "We understood what we wanted to do and what we wanted to accomplish." Read more...
