Excerpt: "The competition between Dan Connor and Mark Herzlich for the Giants starting middle linebacker job is one of the most intriguing of the upcoming preseason.

As we continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giantswill bring to training camp we focus on middle linebacker Dan Connor, one of the free-agent acquisitions the Giants made in the offseason as they focused on improving their run defense.

    2012 Season In Review

Connor, 27, spent 2012 with the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Miscast in the Dallas 3-4 defense, Connor started eight games and made 56 tackles. His rating from Pro Football Focus was a less than stellar -3.6." Read more...

I'm really excited to see what conner brings. My gut tells me he will end up the starter with both seeing plenty of playing time.

I agree w that. I don't think this guys ceiling is incredibly high. However, I think hes the best talent at LB on our roster aside from j williams and can become a very solid starter. He doesnt have great sideline to sideline speed but, partially makes up for that with ability to diagnose run plays and shed through blockers. Hes a sure tackler and generates pretty good power behind his hits. From what ive seen hes decent in zone coverages and takes good angles. Havent seen much man except outta the backfield and he did good getting to the back and disrupting the route. Hes smart and these are the kind of players the giants love. Played well in 4-3 at CAR while he did at a young age, and was a little outta his element in the dallas 3-4 and still played adequate. I think back in his natural position he played in college and in his natural formation he will blossom behind our d line, which is going to hopefully be better and less banged up this year compared to last giving either Herzy or Connor the opportunities to make plays. I really haven't formed too much of an opinion on Herz because no one knows how far along his recovery is and exactly where his ceiling is. With that being said I think Herz plays sub par and hands the job to Connor before too long.

This guy will be our middle linebacker. Herzlich will be the 3rd down LB. Connor can tackle. Herzlich will be the cover guy on 3rd down. I would love to see Herzlich be the every down guy but he might consistent play to get to that level.

Maybe all these LB's can make a nice unit. This may be their last chance at a huge pay day. Could motivate them and creat some good competition.

Imo hes too slow for that. That was one of his biggest weaknesses was coverage... He got burnt a lot and couldn't take angles on ball carrying receivers to save his life. I would love for him to step up and prove me wrong too but I don't think he can perform at that level consistent enough either. Not yet anyway

He's on a one year contract, he didn't impress the Cowboys and he didn't appear to impress the Panthers enough to try and keep him. Thing he is a solid player but I think he is slow and that is not something we want to see in the NFC east. Philly will put him one on one with the RB and kill us with the short pass (remind you of a time a short while ago)... I like Hers's size he has a huge wing span and that in itself is helpful. Love to see him step up...

Good point! His wing span has enabled him to make shoe string and leg tackles after almost being beat. Ive been waiting for some athleticism at the mike pos. for what seems like forever... I miss Pierce, just saying lol

Herzlich as the cover LB? I'd rather sign a cheerleader for that.

We really need to be in a 4-2-5 on passing downs, we just don't have a middle linebacker that can drop back and cover the middle.
