  • If we win on Sunday, we will set an NFL Record...

This is pretty cool, I read this the other day on my mobile app, and just found the link on the site:

    http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/Inside-the-Numbers-Giants-vs-Cowboys/d73fdb91-2b0b-477b-8789-bbd719757c9b

If we win the Division, it will be the NFL Leading 23rd time that a team has won their division.

If we lose it will create a 4-way tie for first place with 22.

Check out the article - it is pretty cool.

    Here is to number 23!

yea , but most of that was before the AFL/NFL
merger, and 80% of the current fan base were even born.

Well he does have a valid point. But I'll gladly use that stat to bludgeon fans of other teams when they mouth off about him ham or blizz bl***

ummm what counts as a first place finish?

Seriously, how is this right? The Giants have 15 division titles since 1933? Or am I missing something...

Well hell, 23 is one of my favorite numbers. That's gotta count for something, right?

Another "record" that will be achieved no matter who wins Sunday night is that this will be the first time since the merger that the East will be won by a team with fewer than 10 wins.

You are probably missing quite a bit.

Re-Read the article, or read it and absorb it if you have not done so. It is pretty self explanatory.

The point of the article is that the GIANTS have been a pretty successful franchise since their inception. Right up there with the Bears and Packers.

Dallas had hardly any competition for the Division in the 60s and 70s, so their achievement that took about half the time as the GIANTS/Bears/Packers is a testament to the greatness of Landry/Schramm/Brandt.

Does that sum it up for you?

Ya - it is not common to take a division with 8 or 9 wins, but it is still surprising that it has never happened before in the NFC East. It was definitely a down year for our division. It will be interesting to see what next year brings.

Same for the Packers and Bears.

Until 1932 you just won by standing, best winning pct. That's how the Giants won their first title in 1927.

1933-1967 there were two divisions and you won the division by standing. The two champs played in the championship game. Yes, there were fewer teams but there were also way fewer playoff spots (2 instead of 12 today). The Giants played in the title game 16 times only winning 3 (33, 34, 35, 38 39, 41, 43, 44, 46, 50, 56, 58, 60, 61, 62).

Then in 68 when the AFL-NFL (nee SuperBowl) games started they went to 3 divisions plus one wildcard, and that's grown into the current playoff system where almost half the league makes the playoffs.
