  • Leonard: Top 5 Giants storylines as rookie minicamp gets underway

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...icle-1.3982384

Excerpt: "The quarterback is typically the story at rookie minicamp whenever an NFL team drafts one. But this weekend's Giants two-day camp provides several more layers of intrigue given the magnitude of April's draft.

Namely, as fourth-round QB Kyle Lauletta out of Richmond throws his first passes as a Giant, all eyes also will be on No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkley, who faces the pressure of being a savior of sorts for incumbent 37-year-old starter Eli Manning — as well as possibly the future face of the franchise.

So here are the top five storylines to follow as rookie camp gets underway at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, with morning coach and player availability followed by afternoon practices.

    1. ALONG CAME A SPIDER

Lauletta, 22, the former Richmond Spiders quarterback, was drafted because the Giants quietly understood the need to add a passer to their roster in this draft with Manning near the end; they simply weren't high on any of the first-rounders and prioritized winning now. This means that even though the 6-2, 222-pound Lauletta is a fourth-rounder — and second-year QB Davis Webb was only a 2017 third-rounder — there is still the pressure for at least one of them to prove that he can A) be a suitable backup to Manning this coming season and B) even be Eli's successor. Because in one or two years, the Giants don't want to join the gaggle of NFL teams overpaying for the next mediocre free agent QB; they want to have their guy already in the building. This is the dilemma lurking not so far in the future, and Lauletta — fair or not — shoulders some of the pressure to solve it. Lauletta is supposed to be smart, comfortable throwing on the run, and accurate. It'll be interesting to see it translate at this level.

    2. SAQUON'S QUITE THE CATCH

Everyone knows Saquon Barkley, 21, is talented, but what head coach Pat Shurmur identified as most important to him is Barkley's ability to catch the football and be a reliable receiver. And that's what I'll be watching this weekend when No. 26 is on the field. Minnesota RB Jerick McKinnon, who signed a monster free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, had 68 targets (4.3 per game) last season on Shurmur's Vikings offense, ranking 13th in the entire NFL among running backs, per fantasypros.com. And McKinnon was sharing snaps much more often with the likes of Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray than Barkley likely will be this season. With Shane Vereen gone, Barkley and Wayne Gallman likely will assume most if not all of Manning's targets to backs (Paul Perkins was waived on Thursday with a non-football injury). Barkley had 102 catches for 1,195 yards (11.7 average) and eight receiving TDs in three seasons at Penn State. He had 54 grabs for 632 yards (11.7 avg) and three of those TDs in his third and final year. Now he'll have to do it in the NFL." Read more...

Very interesting story lines. Carter could be exciting and hoping Gates makes other teams jealous they didn't take him

Barkley & HERNANDEZ are going to be stars
Football has been very, very good to us.
After losing seasons 2013-15, the giants put up 11 wins in 16.. they are on way Back
But for now we can console ourselves with this fact-

    # of Super Bowl victories since 1985:

1-Chicago, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Seattle
    2-Washington, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Baltimore
    3-San Francisco, Dallas, Denver
    4-New York Giants!!!
    5-NE
Let's make it 5 in 2016 so we can be on a LINE NE again!!!

Just wrap Barkley in bubble wrap and teach him his responsibilities in the passing game. Nothing good can come of him running around on a football field right now.

The CB group is gonna be very interesting to see. If the other new additions meet expectations and a star can emerge from the CB group we just might be in business
            Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“I wrote after the combine that Engram was entering the first-round discussion, and I've moved him above David Njoku as my second-ranked tight end. … He put up the best 40 time (4.42) among tight ends and the fourth-best vertical (36 inches) at the combine. At 6-3, 234, Engram had 65 catches for 925 yards and eight touchdowns in 2016.”
