  • 9 observations from Giants OTAs Week 2 | Landon Collins heavily involved after surgery

Excerpt: "Things around the Giants are heating up.

Not just because of the attendance — Odell Beckham is a no-show — but because of the 80-degree temperatures.

"It was a good day for us," head coach Pat Shurmur said. "Coming off a four-day weekend, we had a little bit of heat to it. It’s always good when you add the elements to it. I told the players that we want to build a gritty team that can overcome the environment, and this is the first time they had a little bit of heat.

"I think it was good. They pushed through it. So just one more step closer to being a good football team. The guys competed well, and we’ll get a chance to have two more of these this week."

Here are nine observations from the fourth of 10 OTA practices:

    Collins involved

Strong safety Landon Collins was active in individual drills and 7-on-7 passing drills during practice. It's much more than was expected of Collins after he underwent a second surgery on his broken forearm in late April.

The two-time Pro Bowler didn't seem to have any difficulty catching and securing the ball during interception drills.

Collins was wearing a red pinny over his jersey — quarterbacks usually are the only players in red during a practice — to signify no contact. He said he was hoping to be full-go by training camp, and it appears Collins is ahead of his own schedule.

"He was out there competing in a limited basis and he’s trying to do everything he can as he finishes up his rehab," Shurmur said. "I’m hopeful (he is ready by training camp). There’s a break, right? So, as it heals up and he gets back to where he’s 100 percent, then we’ll get him out there."

Collins' decision to practice — and perhaps jeopardize his health — is particularly interesting against the backdrop that he is on the final year of his contract.

There has been no indication that an extension for Collins is on the horizon and he seems willing to take a backseat to the contract talks between the Giants and Odell Beckham because Beckham has been in the NFL one year longer.

    Catch of the day

Roger Lewis had a nice one-handed catch moving toward the sideline, but Kalif Raymond made the catch of the day on a deep pass from Davis Webb.

The 5-foot-9 Raymond laid out full extension to make the over the shoulder grab, then bounced up and started running after believing he was not touched on the ground.

Raymond, who has 12 career games of experience, including six with the 2017 Giants, is in a battle of 11 wide receivers vying for the Nos. 3-5 spots on the depth chart behind Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard.

    Shepard catching punts

Who is going to return kickoffs and punts for the Giants?

Saquon Barkley returned kickoffs at Penn State, and Beckham sometimes returned punts during his first three years with the Giants, but Shurmur sounds reluctant to put his offensive stars in that position.

And yet Shepard was with the punt returners during Tuesday's practice.

Raymond and Hunter Sharp could be return specialists, but Shepard is an interesting option. He hasn't had a return during his NFL career, but he has the speed.and moves to be dangerous in open field." Read more...

I certainly feel your pain on this one. Not to mention, the pre-game and post game discussions.
