  • Ereck Flowers: Giants need to do what's best for them | 'I want to prove to myself I can play'

Excerpt: "Giants right tackle Ereck Flowers feels he has plenty to prove ... to an audience of one.

"I have to prove myself every time I hit the field and get better every year," Flowers said after Wednesday's practice in his first interview of the offseason. "Mainly, I just want to do it for myself. It's not for anybody else. I want to prove to myself I can play at a certain level."

The Giants would like to see that proof, too.

It was an eventful offseason for Flowers, who was moved to right tackle when the Giants signed free agent Nate Solder to play left tackle, the subject of trade talks, a no-show at a three-practice pre-draft voluntary minicamp and had his fifth-year contractual option declined.

"At the end of the day, they've got to do what's best for their organization," Flowers said in a show of candor. "I don't have any personal feelings about it. Any player can get traded. I didn't get traded. I'm still here. I haven't even thought about it."

The most difficult part for Flowers was the phone call from head coach Pat Shurmur informing him he was switching positions to make room for Solder. Teammate Landon Collins said that is why Flowers no-showed for the minicamp before attending all 10 voluntary OTAS.

"Of course," Flowers said when asked if it was difficult to receive the news, "but I love playing football, so it's whatever now."

Flowers was told he had to compete to win the starting right tackle job, but it appears he is way out in front in any position battle. He has taken every first-team rep ahead of Chad Wheeler in the media-attended OTAs and the current mandadtory minicamp." Read more...

This is what he should be saying:

"I have to stop ducking my head. Every time I do that Eli gets destroyed."

"I have to work on my punch. I am a stud in the weight room, which is why Jerry Reach drafted me, and I have to use those muscles correctly in the NFL otherwise I will be bagging groceries very soon."

"I have to work on my footwork. Outside speed rushers blow by me all the time, and when they do, Eli gets destroyed."

"And when Eli gets destroyed, the stupid people on this messageboard whine all day about Eli."

I wish him well because he is our best shot out there right now.

We really need to start some hitting soon.
Articles are getting tedious for me.
No one remembers who came in second.

should have been on the right side all along. left tackle was never an option for him in anyone's opinion. but the clowns running this team last few years tried to force it relentlessly.

since day 1 of his drafting every expert in the sport said right tackle at best or more likely guard.

I want to believe this guy as badly as anyone else, but seeing that interview just screams "my agent coached me up on how to maximize my payday next offseason". His poker face really needs work. He even dropped a "i love this game" in there which is the tell of all tells.
