Excerpt: "Quietly, the Giants secondary is emerging as the strength of the defense, a distinction once held by the defensive line.

With the front four ailing and aging and the linebacking corps a work in progress even with the arrival of Jon Beason, the secondary has stepped up as the last line of defense despite losing starting safety Stevie Brown and starting cornerback Corey Webster to injuries.

Ryan Mundy and Will Hill have replaced Brown and veteran Trumaine McBride has performed admirably in Webster’s absence.

Cornerback Terrell Thomas, who is coming back from a third ACL surgery, has been outstanding as the nickel back. Safety Antrel Rolle is playing at a Pro Bowl level.

This afternoon, third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien will make his first career start when his Packers meet the Giants at MetLife Stadium. He’s coming off an impressive NFL regular-season debut against the Eagles last week and the Giants secondary is looking to cool him off.

The numbers speak to the improvement of the secondary.

Last season, the Giants ranked 28th in passing defense in the NFL, allowing 254.2 yards per game. They allowed 13 passing plays of 40 or more yards, the second-most in the league.

This season, the Giants rank 11th in passing defense, giving up 226.9 yards per game. Through nine games, they’ve yielded just two passing plays of 40 or more yards.

The secondary, led by Rolle, has promised that it isn't overlooking the unproven Tolzien with a showdown with the Cowboys looming next week.

What’s your confidence level in the secondary? Will it school young Tolzien this afternoon or will Tolzien take them to school?" Read more...
