  • Cruz, Giants Hang On To Slim Playoff Hopes

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...icle-1.1531689

Excerpt: "The Giants are coming off a humbling, painful loss to the rival Dallas Cowboys, a loss in a game they said they had to win. The defeat dropped them to 4-7 and left them with barely any playoff hopes.

But just when you thought the Giants would quit on the season, they’re promising not to give up. On Sunday in Washington, against the always-tough Redskins, Victor Cruz says this team will shock the naysayers.

“I think we’re going to go out on Sunday and really put our best foot forward and really surprise people,” Cruz said on Wednesday.

He added that he knows “people are counting us out,” after the crushing 24-21 loss to the Cowboys, but these Giants won’t let that bother them.

“We don’t care about anyone from the outside,” he added. “We only care about what’s in this locker room. And we understand that we are behind each other 100%, we have each other’s backs, and let’s go out and do this. We didn’t get that done (against Dallas). It’s unfortunate, but we still have more games to play.”

The playoffs are a longshot at this point, and all the Giants — including Cruz — realize that. But this team, just two years removed from a Super Bowl title with a Super Bowl countdown clock in the locker room, is still too proud to quit, and too proud to stop talking.

That’s why Sunday night’s game against the Redskins (3-8) is more critical than it looks on paper to Big Blue. Washington coach Mike Shanahan seemed to admit Wednesday that his players were playing out the string, saying that “when you play, you’re paid to do a job and everybody’s fighting for their jobs.”

For the Giants, it’s more than that. To Cruz, this team wants to prove it can still win.

“It’s definitely important,” he said of the showdown in Washington, “just for our own personal belief. We understand we can do it. We understand we can win these games, but we have to physically go out there and do it.” Read more...
