  • The Eli Manning-Phillip Rivers Trade Revisited

    http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...revisited.html

Excerpt: "Eli Manning and Philip Rivers will be forever linked by the 2004 Draft in which Manning was taken No. 1 overall by San Diego and Manning was selected fourth by the Giants.

Before the draft, Manning said he wouldn’t play for the Chargers and then-Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi pulled off a draft-day deal to acquire Manning.

The Giants got Manning. The Chargers received Rivers, a 2004 third-round pick (K Nate Kaeding), a 2005 first-round pick (LB Shawne Merriman) and a 2005 fifth-round pick (traded to Tampa Bay for OT Roman Oben).

The trade appears to be a win-win for both sides.

This will be just the third meeting between the pair, with Rivers holding a 2-0 advantage.

Over the course of their careers, Rivers has a slight statistical edge but Manning has the hardware." Read more...

    That's downright laughable.

    Rivers:
    128 games, 64.3% completion rate, 31,524 yards, 212 TDs, 102 INTs, 95.6 QB rating

    Eli:
    149 games, 58.6% completion rate, 34,522 yards, 226 TDs, 162 INTs, 82.0 QB rating

If you could go back in time, would you trade rivers?
They said Brady and the Patriots couldn't be beat, Eli did it twice, how's that for Elite?

we were going to go with Big Ben had that trade never happened. id say out of the 3 Eli has the worst career stats . but EA said it wasnt his stats it was his comeback abilty and shaking off a multi int game , that is why he wanted Eli and really you cant argue with that.

Hell f&**&g no. To say Eli won those Super Bowl MVPs when no other team even put up 20 points against our defense in 8 games is insane. And that includes 2 overtime playoff games. Who's to say the Giants don't go on only 2 Super Bowl runs with measly 10-6 and 9-7 records and rout the teams by 40 points with Rivers? How many 11 and 12 win seasons did Rivers have? How is he able to have over a 104 QB rating this season when no one has any idea who his receivers are?

I'd make the trade over and over and over. Don't think much of Ben and Rivers doesn't impress me at all. Numbers don't mean a thing if you can't win big games and can't come up big in championship situations.

Its a good rivalry. The fans still feel jilted from what was said on the radio this morning. Eli will be greeted with boos and several posters with some unkind words

Has Rivers won any SBs in that fashion?

I think the evidence speaks for itself. The Giants won that trade in a major way.

Rivers- better stats, west coast offense, warmer weather, more efficient, worse coaching, a fiery attitude
Eli- gilbride offense, cold weather, too many interceptions, more durable, more clutch, super bowls, inconsistent coaching, even keel attitude

It is what it is. Argue about the teams around them, but a lot of those comparisons aren't apples to apples. Both have had good and bad teams around them at different points in their careers.

That's the thing you will never know so why bother? I am happy with Eli. Oh, by the way Rivers couldn't handle the press in New York, he would have had several meltdowns.

                            Both have questionable mechanics
Eli occasional backfoot throws, throws while he's turning or ducking
Rivers side arming the ball submarine style. floaters

This isn't an Aaron Rodgers/Drew Brees comparison

One thing is for sure, I believe without Eli, we wouldn't have 2 rings
