It's extremely rare when it's resigning your own players. If the Giants had any reservations about bringing him back, there's no sense giving him a contract in March. There's no mystery to what Herzlich's role is or why they resigned him. He's an excellent Special Teams player, and can backup at all the LB spots if need be. He's not going to compete for a starting spot on Defense.

It is rare a player that a team RE-SIGNS after having him for many years gets cut without being injury related. So, no. Im not sure I could give you one example of that. Now if we cut Mark and he was signed by say the Ravens, sure, he may get cut. They dont know him.

With that said, does anyone think that if we let Mark walk out and test FA any other team would sign him? Very doubtful.

This signing means next to nothing. Herz is part of the 90 man squad at this point and can get cut at any point.
We don't really even need anymore starting LBers, Kennard, Robinson, Casillas and Goodson can take up all the play time

Kennard and Robinson on nickel base set, with Casillas rotating in (all serviceable to very good in coverage)

Goodson comes in as the run stuffing specialist when we're in 43

          Straight

Still one of the worst LB corps in the league. I was hoping for a Rueban Foster to bulster it a bit.

Na its not that bad, and it's a good fit for our D, the only ones who are gonna be full time players are Kennard and Robinson and they're exactly the type of players this D needs in that spot, just guys who can cover and are serviceable against the run, they're just an extension of our dback, most runs against us are gonna be stuffed at the line, and you can't throw to wide receivers thanks to our top flight secondary, so the only thing left to take away is TEs and RBs coming out of the backfield, which I'm sure you remember we used to get destroyed by annually before last year

Fundamentally the construction of this defense overall is absolutely beautiful, perfectly complimentary skill sets across the board with prototype fits, only thing that's missing right now is a DT and I think Hank resigns, he would be the only guy that's not an absolute perfect fit, a traditional pass rushing 3T would be a bit better but it's fine and just gives us something different up front (4 incredible run stuffers on the line) which actually does kinda compliment our LBers who's best attribute overall is coverage, which is what we want

Keep in mind the 3rd LBer who comes in for 43 is pretty much a part time player anymore, like a nickel corner back in the day, I don't like handing unproven guys full time roles and praying, but I'm fine with Goodson being a starter in 43 sets, were in nickel most of the time anyway and he fits the skillset we would want from the 3rd LBer on the field, a run stuffer

Last year I'd say our LBers as a whole prob ranked in the high teens or low 20s in the league, def not near the worst, they're serviceable in their roles, they don't have to make many plays with our secondary and DLine both being stellar

Guess what.....There are better guys that can actually contribute elsewhere...not just S/T's
