We're arguing over the validity of comments like this:
"I'd much
rather play with a guy who wants to be here than with a guy who doesn't
want to be here. Regardless of his talent," he said. "It gives us the
opportunity to turn the focus where it needs to be. The team with the
least distractions has a heads up on people who do have it. We can go
into camp with the ball rolling."
These are the comments of one of our team leaders.
Yes....I know....you're not buying it.
Well yeah, its not that I don't buy it at all, it just that I think its an EXTREMELY Minor factor if its a factor at all, do I believe that he'd rather play with someone who wants to be there....Yes I do, Do I think it matters who he would rather play with? No I don't...I believe the outcome will be the same eitherway....this differs from Talent, I believe if someone is talented and someone else is not, the talented player give your team a better chance to win. Talent and Skill are tangible relative to "Team Unity" and can be measured. Team Unity is sorta like Magic, you can believe in magic if you want to, and it can't "Hurt" to have it on your side....but is there any proof that it really exists (or in this case makes a difference)... nope there isn't. So If I have to choose between something im not sure even makes a difference and something I KNOW makes a difference (like Talent) I choose the sure bet everyday of the week and twice on sunday, Talent matters....there is no denying that, does team unity matter? obviously you think so, I don't, but neither of us know for sure...I know for SURE that Talent matters.
LOL... if Brandon Jacobs becomes the best back in NY Giants history, I will drive to Pomona and buy multiple rounds of whatever you're drinking.----JB-Giants

Team Unity dosen't really exist or make a difference. You better hope that your confining that to last years SuperBowl run and that is all. It makes it no less an unintelligent concept but whatever. Otherwise that ranks as the most extreme absurd and just plain stupid bit of hyperbole I have ever seen on this MB. But I can see it comes from a singular mindset that has never experienced what a team and unity and loyalty to a team is. You deserve pity for this. But I have to harken to whats been said before. You can't fix stupid.

The Giants are in the wrong when they let Shockey go. Shockey is still a good te. The Giants should have accomidate the playbook for him. Shockey has the talent to do a lot of things on the field more than most tes in the NFL. Yet he does not get the opportunities to do things that can help the Giants.
As for Shockey not wanting to be a Giant, that may be true but, the Giants should have told him that they would give him more opportunities to get the football. He needs the football because he has the talent to do things that could help the Giants put up a lot of points. Now I feel that Gilbride may not have the ability to change his philosphy. If he can't, then the Giants may have a lot of trouble on offense. There are still questionmarks on both sides of the ball. Now there are even more questions when Shockey was traded. The Saints want him for a good reason and they know better than posters who put Shockey down. As for Shockey acting up, I like it, it shows that he wants to win. Instead of Reese trading him, he should have march his behind into Gilbride's or Coughlin's office with Shockey and see what they could do to help Shockey get more catches, yards and tds.
Strahan is no longer with the Giants and now Shockey is gone. This is not good for the Giants. To me Boss did little in the playoffs. He has caught some balls and all of a sudden he will be a good te in a lot of posters' minds. Well Shockey is an above talent but no matter how talented he is, the OC has got to write football plays that will bring Shockey's abilities out.

Shockey is a good TE but he is paid an an elite TE which he isn't. Not only that he whines, refuses to be part of the team, and is a cancer. The Giants won a Super Bowl without this cancer and Eli played his best stretch of football, all against playoff caliber teams with Shockey gone. Shockey's behavior is childish and moronic, something few High School Football Caoches would put up with for long. Gilbride would be a fool to change his philosophy, he won a Super Bowl with it. His best change last year was puytting Boss in the starting lineup. Shockey is near the end oof his career as he is another "Lavar Arrington" - he will injured by October. The Redskin fans laughed at the Giants when they signed Arrington and the Giant fans will be laughing at the Saints (along with acquiring two draft picks) for taking Shockey. Reese successfully jetisoned the Giant's cancer to the Saints for a profit - the man is a genius.

Shockey was my favorite player. I didnt know what to think when I found out that the Giants had traded him, guess i was mad at first but then in thinking about it some more I think it is for the best. I will miss his desire and willingness to do all that is necessary to win. He brought so much fire and intesnsity to the team, which was sometimes both good and bad.
At the end of the day the NFL is a business and you have to think about what is best for the team. I would have loved a 2nd and a 4th rounder or a 1st and a 6th. I also think that it was smart to get the picks for next year. With what Resse has done with his draft picks so far in his career as the GM, I am more than confident that he will select good quality players that can compete right away for jobs.
Funny story, I am a teacher and I am teaching summer school right now. I told my students that my favorite player got traded to another team and I am kinda upset. One of my students says to me, "well why dont you just start liking that team". I had to laugh. It also made me realize that for me it is about the GIANTS not just one player.
I also am in the market for a new jersey. I am thinking the other firestarter on offense, JACOBS!!!
18-1! WRITE THAT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sheds a bit more light on things. This is Mike Pope from an article in this mornings Bergen Record: " But yes
we did have a rather unique relationship because of some of the
absences that existed in his upbringing.”
To
Shockey, Pope became something of the father-figure he did not have
during his childhood. “I think a player sometimes can be at a place too
long,” Pope said. “And I think the things that happened, the injury and
the things that went on in his mind, having to watch the Super Bowl and
the team continuing to succeed I think he realized that teams
continue to move on when individuals aren’t there.
“What
went on and all those things that took place, he obviously felt he
needed a new place, a new start. It was just time for him to move on.” http://www.northjersey.com/sports/Giant_expectations.html
"Good to see you again Brett."
