    Army Denies Rookie

This is horrible, they get this kids hopes up to play football and gets drafted than some jack *** bans him from playing football. LINK- http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-lions-campbellarmy&prov=ap&type=lgns

    --

DETROIT (AP)—Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.

Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.

But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.

In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for “full-time traditional military duties.”

Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.

Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft “in good faith.”

I think the Army could of handled this differently. They should have let the kid play, it would have been a positive PR move. I myself have been in the military for eight years.

yeah but they changed the rule all of a sudden now that he did get drafted? you know they did that on purpose cause they didnt think it was going to happen. and when it did the army s*** themselves and had to find away to get him back. the army is not going to pay for you to go to westpoint just to play pro ball when you get out. then you would have everyone in there mother trying to do that.

    Re: Army Denies Rookie

What does the Army mean by "he was allowed to enter the draft in good faith"???

As a former Marine, and athlete, I can't understand why potential pro prospects agree to play for any of the military academies...
If you've got the skills and grades for West Point, then it's not the only school knocking on your door...

The days where guys like Staubach, even McConkey serving in the military, and then going on to NFL fame is long gone...

It's sad, to tell a kid "go ahead, see if you can get drafted", and when he does, to take it away from him...

To top it off, to change policy, and not "grandfather" this guy...
Wait and see if he makes the team, and maybe, he could be to the NFL, what David Robinson was to the NBA...

After the Pat Tillman scandal, the Army could use an image boost, and this isn't it...

    Re: Army Denies Rookie

    from wikipedia.....

Due to a newly implemented rule at the U.S. Military Academy that would change the way cadets are selected in the NFL Draft, Campbell was able to pursue a professional football career.

    The rule states:

Cadets accepted into the program, "will owe two years of active service in the Army, during which time they will be allowed to play their sport in the player-development systems of their respective organizations and be assigned to recruiting stations. If they remain in professional sports following those two years, they will be provided the option of buying out the remaining three years of their active-duty commitment in exchange for six years of reserve time."[3]

im thinking the kids long term goals was the army and didnt know he had a chance to be drafted till later on.

If that was the case, I would've told him to go and play for an Ivy League school, if undrafted, then join the Army...
West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy are basically Ivy League schols, with a hitch...

    Send Jacobs to Iraq.

    Theyll surrender within a week.

Eli Manning doesn't wear a watch. . . . . He decides what time it is.

    Re: Army Denies Rookie

Here's another perspective on it.  Not saying I agree with it, but just another perspective.... link

Tillman left the NFL to go to the Army.  Many good football players have done both, their military service and the NFL.
