Re: THEE NYG SWAG THREAD

NY Rangers rumoredto be interestedin Rick Nash of Columbus Blue Jackets

Saturday night, a Rangers scout was in Minnesota for the Columbus Blue
Jackets’ 3-1 win over the Wild, and he sure wasn’t there to watch former
Ranger Erik Christensen.

Last-place Columbus is a known seller approaching the Feb. 27 trade deadline and forwards Rick Nash and Jeff Carter
are their two most attractive commodities. The Rangers do host Columbus
on Sunday in their only meeting of the season, but Saturday’s Ottawa
Sun quoted a source as saying that GM Glen Sather had interest in Nash.

Nash is in just the second season of an eight-year, $62.4 million
contract carrying a $7.8 million annual cap hit. The Rangers only have
$6.95 million left under the cap, so they would need to make room.

Nash (18 goals this season) would give the Rangers (36-13-5) — who have
struggled at times to score — an established threat who could take
pressure off Marion Gaborik and Ryan Callahan.

“We’re not going to comment on trade rumors or speculation at this time,” said Joe Resnick, Nash’s agent.

The Ranger scout’s presence fuels a fire that started burning in
January. A Columbus scout has attended at least two of the Rangers’ past
four home games, and Saturday the Blue Jackets sent three people,
including GM Scott Howson, to the Rangers-Flyers game in Philadelphia.

NHL.com reported that Howson met with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren, but the Ottawa Sun’s report speculated that Columbus “may demand” Brandon Dubinsky, prospect Chris Kreider and a No. 1 pick for Nash.

That’s a tricky proposition, though. While unloading Dubinsky’s $4.2
million annual cap hit through the 2014-15 season would free space, the
winger is a key member of the Blueshirts’ core who has picked up his
game recently. Dubinsky is a favorite of fans and perhaps more
importantly, John Tortorella, and trading a player with his passion could mess with team chemistry. Nash also would have to waive his no-movement clause.

“We have depth, great defense, great goaltending, guys that can score,” defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. “I think we all believe what we have is working for us.”
