gonna be the 32nd ranked defense next year.

In my ideal world, the following would be gone:
Tuck
Osi
Diehl
Webster
Baas
Boothe
Only guy I'd think about signing through FA would be Michael Bennett if we can get him. Marty has already said he'd like to try and convince him to come to our team.
Spend significant amount of the draft on the O-line.
Signing Grimes will cost more than keeping Webster, even after a major injury. And Webster is not getting paid 9million. He gets paid his base. The cap hit just includes the signing bonuses he was paid earlier in the restructure. People need to let it go as if he's getting paid a probowl corner's salary. He's getting paid the median for a starter in the current market. That high number is due to some sloppy restructuring on behalf of the FO, not Webster.
The Giants value cornerbacks, even bad ones, too much for them to let Webster go. And he's not a free agent, and they're not cutting him. There was obviously something going on with him this year, you don't go from a virtual shutdown corner to what he was this year for no reason. I don't think it would be a real bad bet to think that Webster comes back looking a whole lot better than he did this year. If Webster regains his form, and Prince stays healthy you've got a pretty good pair of corners right there.
I think Kenny Phillips is in far more jeopardy of going elsewhere. First off he's a FA, so he can leave of his own accord; second, with his injury situation the Giants may not be willing to spend big money on him while some other teams might take a chance; and third, I think there's going to have to be a choice made between Brown and Phillips, since they're going to have to pay Brown more next year too. I see Phillips as the guy that might leave because of Brown's INT numbers this year, and Brown will still probably be the lower priced of the two. I really can't see them signing both of them with their salary cap situation. Also, Rolle is back, Will Hill is probably the most athletic safety we've got and he looks ready for prime time, and if they sign Brown, I just don't see Phillips being back.
Also, Tuck stays and collects the cash for the final year of his contract, no question. Reese won't cut him, and he doesn't appear to be retiring.
Diehl is a mystery. I really thought he'd announce his retirement by now. If he forces the issue and comes back, then somebody has to make a decision, and I think that decision is that Diehl gets cut. Either way, I dont see him being on the opening day roster.
Bennett is a guy I'm sure they'd like to keep, and he said he's willing to work out a favorable contract to stay, so I'm hoping he's a Giant for the next four or five years.
Osi, I dont see coming back, unless the market falls flat for him. That could happen since his value as a full-time DE is zero. I'm not sure how many teams are willing to pay for a pass rushing specialist who didn't get that many sacks this year. If he comes back it won't be a very big salary, and I hope they alternate him with a run stopping DE, someone in the Curtis McGriff mold.
Boothe comes back, I'm pretty sure of that one, and Beatty is a no brainer.
Barden and HIxon are very low priorities. I like Barden and I'd almost like to see him go somewhere that he would have a real chance of playing. I think that even if the Giants try to keep him, getting real playing time is going to be a big part of his decision. I see Barden looking for the playing time, and leaving.
Cruz is another no brainer; but he needs to be realistic in his expectations. The Giants simply can't afford to break the bank on one player. They have another batch of big time free agents next year.
Baas hasn't been worth his contract in my book; but the coaches like him, so I think he stays and plays. The only thing that might hurt him is the salary cap situation. If they slide Boothe to center (which hasn't worked all that well in the past) they might consider cutting Baas to get rid of his contract; but I dont think that's very realistic.
Who's coming: I don't see any marquee free agents being signed, it just hasn't worked out all that well in the past. I hope we see at least one top tier OL and DL early in the draft. I'd love to see a big run stopping DE and a massive run blocking RT drafted. We need to get back to the nasty, immovable DL, and the straight ahead, pancake blocking RT. Tuck might be better served by sliding down to DT. I think they need a good MLB early on too.
That's a lot to ask for from where we're drafting, and BPA isn't going to plug the holes in this team. Reese might have to pass on a highly ranked skill guy to take an almost as highly ranked beast lineman. But, I think that's what's needed this year. We need two or three nasty SOB's to come in and shake these units up upfront. I don't want dirty players; but I want some guys who don't take no for an answer and play at full steam all the time. We need to get some attitude back on both sides of the ball.
Cruz's situation is going to end up like Steve Smith's. I do not think the Giants will have enough space to give him a contract, and Reese believes that Randle, Barden, and Jernigan can develop for a cheap price. If Cruz gets the contract, do no expect Nicks to be a giant for long and do not expect to sign any big time free agents. Webster is not going to be cut and his contract is to big to restructure because it will keep us from locking up our young guys in the future. Osi and Benard will be gone. Beatty will get a solid contract and Boothe may be gone, I think Boothe will test the market.
Reese needs to lock up Cruz long term and let his free agent busts play out there contracts until its a reasonable price to cut them. For a team that builds though the draft, its kind of silly that we are this tight against the cap, that shows that the GM does not know a thing about managing the cap. Its not like we make big free agent splashes, we paid to much for average guys in free agency and did to much restructuring that hurt us in the long run.
looks like the team will shopping at WalMart this year for help due to the salary cap mess..
