Too harsh ? There are things the league found out that maybe the rest of us didn't know. Payton had to get it hit hard, because it happened on His watch. Don't listen to the we all did it crowd, that is nonsense. You would never here that on a TC coached team.

    He got what he deserved.
However, with 3 coaches being suspended without pay will now allow the saints to resign brees to a long term deal. Saints fans can thank roger goodall for that
Football has been very, very good to us.
Even though 2013 was a losing season, we can console ourselves with this fact-

    # of Super Bowl victories since 1985:

1-Chicago, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Seattle
2-Washington, Green Bay, Denver, Pittsburgh, Baltimore
    3-San Francisco, Dallas, New England
    4-New York Giants!!!!!

    Let's make it 5 in 2014 !!!

Hard to feel sorry for the Saints. They have some of the most obnoxious fans in the NFL.

I've noticed on SIRIUS most of the talking heads are/were outraged about the discipline assessed. I've listened to one former Saints' WR wail away at Goodell suggesting he be suspended and for is making $10M a year. This player's reasoning was that if Goodell was serious, he would go after every team that had a bounty system. He continued about the lack of a full investigation.

There was no mention of the two plus year long investigation during which Saints' management, when originally confronted about the existence of the bounties, denied it existed. The NFL concluded its investigation as they did not have enough hard evidence to refute the denial.

Having dodged the bullet at that time, The Saints' owner instructed that any such program be dismantled. Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton acknowledged the instruction and never, even for a moment, considered ending the practice of offereing bounties to hurt opposing players.

Corroborating evidence eventually surfaced to the extent that is was clear that the Saint's management personnel not only encouraged the practice but helped to find it.

The chickens have come home to roost and the Saints need to look in the mirror to determine who is to blame.

I've never heard of Ornstein before reading the link provided but, if true, I'm surprised Payton hasn't been banned for life.

I think the league had to do what they did but fell short and needed to take it to the next level.

How about suspending every player that collected a bounty?

How about a suspension for collecting a bounty and causing another player to miss games after being injured.

The bounty was there, but it was the individual who made the choice to intentionaly try and take out another NFL player for money.
