NEW YORK GIANTS: THE RETURN OF CHAD JONES
"Drafted in the 3rdround (#76) in the 2010 NFL Draft, Chad
Jones was once considered a steal for the New York Giants. However;
since his accident many fanshave forgotten about the Safety out of LSU.
Fortunately, the Giants haven't forgotten as they have reconstructed the
remaining two years of Jones' contract; which indicates that they feel Jones can
still be a productive player on the team. Here's a look athis pre-draft
scouting report:
Jones was called the best athlete on
the team by many of his LSU Tiger teammates and it would be hard to argue such
an assessment. Jones has been blessed with natural athletic
talent, standing at an imposing 6'3' and 230 pounds. He can run under 4.5 in the
40-yard dash, has great hands, and--not surprisingly--was one of the hardest
hitters in Baton Rouge. Jones started to put all of those tools
together on the football field as a junior in 2009. Playing on an LSU defense
that has always been loaded, Jones did not start as a freshman
(although he contributed significantly) and he started six games as a sophomore.
Emerging as a potent defensive force in 2009, Jones finished fifth on the team
with 74 total tackles and tied for fourth with 37 assists. He led the squad with
three interceptions and he recorded both a blocked kick and a forced fumble.
Jones also returned a punt for a 93-yard touchdown in the
fourth quarter of a 30-26 victory over Mississippi State. Jones never put up
star quality numbers in college, in part because he lacked a ton of experience
and decided to enter the NFL Draft following his junior season. Had he decided
to return for his senior campaign, Jones could have found himself in the first
round of the 2011 draft.
Unfortunately in June of 2010, Jones
was involved in a horrible car accident that nearly cost him his life.
He's been recovering ever since and its been a long road, but Jones has made
some tremendous strides in recent months. Jonesis at 80% and
barring any unforeseen setbacks, Jones should be ready to re-join the Giants
when training camp begins. However, a spot on the team is not a certainty and
he'll have to earn his way on, with Antrel Rolle, Kenny
Phillips and Tyler Sash all guaranteed spots,
Jones' competition will come from any free agents/rookies the
Giants add to the roster.
Other Footnotes: The Giants
GM Jerry Reese addressed a pressing need this week by
re-signing 3 of his own players who had their 2011 seasons cut short by
injuries: Corner-Backs Terrell Thomas, Michael Coe and
Justin Tryon. This will give the Giants the needed depth
along with the draft for training camp.
Here is a list of players the
Giants have either retained or brought under contract since Super Bowl
XLVI:
03/13/2012 Joel Reinders (OL) signed to new
contract
03/13/2012 Larry Donnell (TE) signed to new
contract
03/13/2012 Michael Coe (CB) signed to new
contract
03/13/2012 Justin Tryon (CB) signed to
new contract
03/13/2012 Terrell Thomas (CB) signed to
new contract
03/05/2012 Steve Weatherford (P)
designated Franchise Tag
03/02/2012 Domenik Hixon (WR)

Chris White (C)

02/14/2012 Ryan Purvis (TE)
signed as free agent
02/14/2012 Craig Marshall (DE)

What makes GM Reese so successful
are the little moves he makes. Reese finds players that fit
into the Giants system and if he selects enough, a few should develop into solid
players to contribute to the success of the team."
