SALARY CAP </P>


New York is projected to have about $20 million to work with under the $116 million cap (which is up $7 million from last year's $109 million), and that's a better position than the Giants were in last year at this time. In terms of salary cap room, New York is in the upper third of the league. Even better, the Super Bowl champs don't have a very daunting list of its own free agents to worry about, so general manager Jerry Reese has said the Giants should be able to do their fair share of shopping in the market.</P>


FREE AGENCY </P>


Locking up starting free safety Gibril Wilson is New York's clear-cut No. 1 priority in terms of its own unrestricted free agents. Safety is already a weak spot on the depth chart, and losing Wilson would only compound the problem. The Giants would also like to retain weakside linebacker Kawika Mitchell, although they won't break the bank for him because they're also high on Gerris Wilkinson, a promising second-year player who performed behind Mitchell in 2007.</P>


New York's other free-agent linebacker, Reggie Torbor, became a starter only after 2006 first-round pick Mathias Kiwanuka -- a converted defensive end -- was injured and lost for the season. The Giants are not expected to make much effort to keep Torbor. New York will gladly let defensive tackle William Joseph reach free agency. The team's 2003 first-round pick missed almost all of the season with a back injury and has been a complete bust in his five years in New York.</P>


The Giants would like to retain soon-to-be 42-year-old punter Jeff Feagles, and during Super Bowl week Feagles didn't sound like a guy inclined to retire even if he finally won a ring in his 20th NFL season. New York could keep kicker Lawrence Tynes, but his inconsistency could also prompt the Giants to look in another direction.</P>


Given Ahmad Bradshaw's emergence, reserve running back Derrick Ward will probably be allowed to walk, as will longsnapper Ryan Kuehl. The Giants had two rookie snappers this season, Jay Alford and Zak DeOssie, and both were solid. No. 3 quarterback Jared Lorenzen could return, but only for a minimum deal, with the realization that New York wants an experienced backup behind Eli Manning.</P>

I hope we try to keep Torbor as well. Let the younger guys start if you really think they are ready, but I do think Torbor is pretty solid. I don't know too much about the progression of Whimper/Koets so we'll see down the road how they deal with the LT position.

Hedg****/BJ/Bradshaw are going to be our combo backs.....I'm hoping we can keep RB/Ward as backups as they are solid as well...and we need to rotate our backs because there is no way, and I'm saying it now, there is NO WAY BJ is going through the entire season without getting injured.

So I hope the FO makes a decision based on that.....

It also sounds like Feagles is NOT even close to retiring, and why the heck not? As long as his leg is still strong, might as well stick around for another 2-3 years...

They should most definitly look at a new kicker and let Tynes earn his spot back.....

I'm also not satisfied with RW as PR....

You may want to try TAGF. To be honest, I don't see JR going for any big name FA, and why bother. Did it pay off for the 49rs and the amount of money they paid in Free Agency? I see us sitting back and finding the right "niche" players (Hedge**** and Hixon are perfect examples). RW is solid at PR, not great but solid. </P>

Agreed. It's the same thing going on with the Red Sox, they are not at all opening up their wallet to get Santana, and why would they? They won the WS without him. So getting him at a discount would be icing on the cake, but they don't NEED him, it would be more of a WANT.

The Giants won the SB with these players so logically there's no reason why they can't do it again with the same roster. But we know changes will be made...

Based on the cap, I see us making Gibril an offer. I see our weak/needs attention areas as follows and in priority:</P>


1. CB - Madison/RW are older, Webster is a ?</P>


2. SS - Gibril is solid, Butler isn't, Johnson may fit that gap, maybe a late rounder.</P>


3. PK - Tynes is not the solution</P>


4. LT - Seubert is getting older, move Diehl back in, ???? on Whimpy or Koets</P>


5. LBr - Need some more depth. If we don't resign Kavika, and Tobor, need to address this in the draft. Not sure what this class looks like for day 2 LBrs</P>


Did I miss any areas that need attention? Believe or not, we may want to draft a DE as we are going to be thin if Stray doesn't return and I imagine Awasom is going to get the boot from TC.</P>
