SAINTS DENY GM LOOMIS EAVESDROPPED ON RIVAL COACHES

SAINTS DENY GM LOOMIS EAVESDROPPED ON RIVAL COACHES

"The <a class="meta-org" title="Recent news and scores about the New Orleans Saints." href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/neworleanssaints/index.html?inline=nyt-org">New
Orleans Saints</a> denied a report Monday that said General Manager Mickey
Loomis had the ability to eavesdrop on opposing coaches during games from 2002
    to 2004.

    According to a <a title="ESPN report" href="http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/7846290/new-orleans-saints-mickey-loomis-eavesdrop-opposing-coaches-home-games">report
on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines”</a>, the United States Attorney’s Office in the
Eastern District of Louisiana was told Friday that an electronic device in
Loomis’s suite at the Superdome had been rewired to allow him to listen in on
visiting coaching staffs. ESPN, citing anonymous sources it said were familiar
with the Saints’ game-day operation, reported that the device was in place for
    almost three full seasons. </p>

The report said that the listening device was
installed in 2000, when Randy Mueller was the general manager, and that Mueller
could use it only to monitor Saints coaches during games. After Loomis became
the general manager in 2002, the report said, the device was altered to allow
listening to visiting coaches. ESPN said that it could not determine if Loomis
ever used the device and that the system was dismantled after <a class="meta-classifier" title="More articles about Hurricane Katrina." href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/h/hurricane_katrina/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier">Hurricane
    Katrina</a> damaged the Superdome in 2005. </p>

“This report is 1,000 percent false — completely
inaccurate,” the Saints spokesman Greg Bensel said in an e-mail Monday
afternoon. “We asked ESPN to provide us evidence to support their allegations,
and they refused. The team and Mickey are seeking all legal recourse regarding
    these false allegations.” </p>

The N.F.L. spokesman Greg Aiello said the league had
no knowledge of the allegations. </p>

The Saints are already reeling from <a title="NYT article on bounty investigation" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/03/sports/football/nfl-says-saints-had-bounty-program-to-injure-opponents.html">an
N.F.L. investigation into a bounty system</a> that led to the season-long
suspension of Coach Sean Payton. Loomis has been suspended for the first eight
games of the season for his role in the bounty system. The interim head coach
Joe Vitt will miss the first six games while serving his own suspension. </p>

The league is probably close to announcing discipline
for players who were most actively involved in the bounties, including the
defensive captain Jonathan Vilma. And quarterback Drew Brees has not reported
for the start of off-season workouts because he is unhappy that he has not been
    signed to a long-term contract. </p>

Coaches communicate during games using headsets, and
intercepting the communications among opposing coaches could be potentially
useful if injury information and strategy was discussed. </p>

The New England Patriots lost a first-round draft pick
and Coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 in 2007 when the league found that
the Patriots had improperly videotaped opponents’ defensive signals. League
rules prohibit eavesdropping on opposing coaches, but it is unclear if Loomis
could also face legal trouble for electronically intercepting communications
    from another person." </p>
“Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.” MB Rule # 1
