Why the defensive ends are not getting sacks & how to fix it.

You guys have to remember that the Giants will be playing 16 superbowls this season because it will be the biggest game of the year for every opposing team. That combined with all the film that opposing offensive coordinators watched has lead to the following which has stymied our defensive ends:

    1. Teams are doing 3 and 5 step drops - this forces our ends to change their rush angles, and almost always neutralizes the wide loping outside speed rush
    2. Teams are using their running backs and tight ends to chip our ends - this helps the offensive tackles, all they have to do is protect against the inside rush and force our ends to take the longer outside path to the qb

    How to fix it.

    1. Rush from the inside - since the primary focus has been to shut down our ends, Perry Fewell has to establish the inside pass rush by blitzing or stunting the tackles. It isn't a coincidence that the four sacks the Giants have are from the inside (one from each tackle and two from linebackers blitzing on the inside)
    2. Jam the receivers and play a two man shell - the passes that are killing us are the quick stuff (especially the slants) so it behooves Perry Fewell to get physical with the wide receivers at the LOS to throw of the timing. with the Safteis playing deep, they can dislodge the ball from the receiver who dares to run a deep pattern.
    3. make Phillips the free safety and let Rolle play in the box. sometimes Rolle take terrible angles to the ball and on one play I saw him bite on play action while he was the FS, your first read as a FS should always be pass, then you commit to the run.. He has a strong safety mentality and I think Phillips has better range than Rolle.

Unfortunately, we don't have the experience at corner back to institute press man. It will take Prince, Holsey and Coe some time to get acclimated to playing together in a game before any type of defense is effective.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

Rush from the inside ?? Did you forget who the QB they're facing this week. In the spread they run if the rush to the inside he will be off & running in the secondary before you can blink an eye.

Jam the recievers? They should have been doing that from the git go. The refs let Dallas mug our recievers all night long without throwing any flags & that trend has continued with the replacement refs. I don't know if our under 6' CB's can handle that though.

Roll reversal for Rolle & Phillips may not be wise. They both seem to have trouble with their assignments now & if you changed the plan in the middle of the game they may be worse for ware. IMHO anyway.

First thing is...people are talking about 3 and 5 step drops like no one has taken a 7 step drop and beaten us down the field. We don't need to devise a plan to get sacks against a 3 step drop. That's what the second and third level are for.

We need to devise a plan to get sacks when the opportunity presents itself. Dallas beat us deap and so did Tampa on plays where our Vaunted pass rush should have been able to cause disruption.

tonight the key to the pass rush will be discipline discipline discipline.....
maybe a few surprise edge blitzes with JWill or a CB....

Canty used to help with inside pressure and JPP is basically getting doubled on every damn play....we need Tuck and Osi to start putting in work.

To stop Cam tonight we'll need to play the same kind of D we played for the first 3 quarters against the Eagles in the miracle Matt Dodge game (blitz the HECK out of him)....if he gets time in the pocket (much like any Qb), he will shred us.

were not getting to the QB because Fewell is playing a vanilla "prevent defense" all damm game long......he has to bring more blitzers.

The refs are not calling holding, so you have to bring more defenders

That's not true... PF does bring blitzers from time to time. But when he does, he makes it look like a punt block formation...

Mobile QB ... we don't need sacks ... we need to make sure Cam throws the ball instead of running.

We do that and we win.

Cam is an actual long bomb threat though, unlike Vick...

give him vick treatment. blitz cam from his right, so he is forced to his left. that should affect his accuracy and arm strength somewhat.

the D ends basically need to study film on JPP and emulate him. Kinda sad the 3rd year, raw out of college DE is playing with more technique and causing 100x more pressure than our other two thoroughbreds
