NY Giants' First-Half Report Cards: Surprise! Eli Manning Is Team's MVP
Excerpt: "The party was still going for the Giants on opening night when the Dallas Cowboys gave the Giants what Tom Coughlin called “a bite out of humble pie.” They embarrassed the defending Super Bowl champions on what should have been their night of celebration.
Who knew that was exactly what the Giants needed back then?
“It brings you right back down to earth,” Coughlin said that night. “There won’t be any more blowing smoke up their rear ends. Last year is last year. This year is this year.”
This year, in fact, took off from there. The Giants have won six of their seven games since then, and came within a missed last-second field goal of winning them all. Eli Manning has played like an MVP at times. The running game has experienced a revival. The defense has had great moments and big turnovers throughout.
And halfway through the season, the Giants have reasserted themselves as serious contenders to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
