Exactly, his salary is this because he did the team a favor and restructured twice. It makes the whole discussion silly. His salary wasn't supposed to be 20mil. They put money off, to free up cap space in previous years. Essentially, they are paying him this year for money he was due, in previous years. That's what happens when you restructure.

All he did was agree to switch some salary money ($9MM) to guaranteed bonus money. This allowed the team to spread the cap hit over several years, BUT it also got him ALL that new bonus money up front, instead of waiting for it over the course of the season.
So it cost the team in up front money, but allowed them to spread it out on the cap books.
The effect to Eli was that he got $9MM the day he redid the contract. Thats not doing anyone any favors.
It was a win/win for both parties. Which is fine with me.

But its misleading to suggest that Eli was doing something benevolent for the team and Giants fans. He did what he is supposed to do, do right by himself and his family.

Eli is actually making 13.5 mil this year. Not 20. 20 is his cap hit

The other 6.5 that makes up the 20 mil is dead money.

His job is NOT to take a pay cut in order to give the FO more cap room. Its the job of the FO to manage the cap properly.
His job is to work his *** off as our QB. Its NOT to hand back money to the team because they can't manage that cap.

Agreed, he is not giving back any money, nor should he, nor would any player. And yes, both sides benefited from the restructures.

If you're lucky enough to have a franchise QB, then $20M+ per year is fine. It's the most important position by far in the NFL and a franchise QB can keep you in the hunt year-in-and-year out, even when the team as a whole may not be worthy of it.

That $20M+ per year that Eli gets is piece of mind for the Giants and us fans.
