The Curious Case of David Wilson

Wilson is a bust. Wilson sucks. Wilson needs to be cut. Wilson has terrible vision. Jerry Reese is a fool.

These are claims whispered by Giants fan across the NY metro area and on social media. Are these claims valid? Do we even know for sure?

Wilson was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Entry draft in hopes of being our feature back. The start to his career has been humbling to say the least. We know the story, first game of his career is fumbles in a big spot and arrives in TC's doghouse. While not getting many carries, he was dynamic in the kick return game. He provided the Giants a KR weapon they hadn't had in well over a decade.

In terms of being a ball carrier, I argue Wilson hasn't been given enough of an opportunity to prove his worth. It took until the end of the 2012 before TC started trusting him and giving him an opportunity.

Wilson has played in 21 games in his career. Through 21 games, he has been given 115 carries, which translates to a hair under 5.5 attempts/game. Wilson has reached double digit rushing attempts ONLY 5 times in his career; averaging 7.7, 4.6, 5.0, 3.5, and 4.2 yards per carry in those games, respectively. His career high in rushing attempts was 15 attempts vs the Eagles in Week 17 of last year. The volume of carries he has received thus far is LOW. Behind a struggling o-line, he still has been able to average a respectable 4.4 yard a carry.

Wilson has dynamic speed and agility. Wilson needs more carries before we can give him the bust label and outright cut him. He has the potential (yes the dreaded word) to be a good back. As of right now, the only thing we can label him is someone who hasn't earned the trust via his fumblitis and supposed poor blocking.

Lets give him some carries and see what he does.

After last season...people were slotting him in the pro bowl. Definitely, a what have you done for me lately situation. Walter Payton could have been carrying the ball for the Giants in the first few games and averaged negative yards. Simmer down people.

    He's got to get healthy.

The offensive line has improved since he went down with his injury.

Would love to have him run behind this o-line.

Wilson's going to be very good for us, I'm hoping this injury isn't anything serious.

Me too but spinal stenosis seems like something pretty serious unfortunatley.

    True.

I took it as a great thing they haven't IR'ed him yet + sent him for second opinions. Perhaps its not as serious..

    We can only hope.

The kid is a highlight reel waiting to happen.... Its just unfortunate for him our coaches are idiots... His injury is the issue now and no one knows if he would have still been durable enough but shame on KG for not calling plays getting him in space... Imagine S Peyton has him??? lord...
I want to see Eli in a new system before I throw in the towel in him. He is smart and will adjust.

Wilson is not a bust and never will be. The Giants need power running backs right now because the oline blows. Wilson also needs to keep improving for sure. Another aspect is that they havent gotten Wilson into open space. They stink at screens so that hampers his ability.

    Speed?...Yes. Agility?.....Not really.
he's a straight line runner who has yet to show the "wiggle" required to be a successful back in the league. He does have some power which has been a pleasant surprise but he seems to be a guy with limitations.
The word "bust" is hard to define. he definitely hasn't warranted his first round position. He can still be an effective runner for us but probably only as part of a 1-2 combination.
He doesn't seem to have much of a chance to be an every down runner.

Why did you have to wait for jakk to return before posting this thread? There is all legitimate discussion about Wilson, such as what his ceiling will eventually be, can he learn to block like Bradshaw (which took Bradshaw 3-4 seasons himself to become what he is now in blocking), should he be put on IR or not with the 5 billion running backs we have on the roster now...

Then there's Wilson haterade, with the people saying he doesn't belong in the NFL and is nothing but pure 100% bust on the level of Tyrone Wheatley... Wilson has already shown more in his rookie year alone than Wheatley did in his entire career, not to mention that unlike Wheatley, Wilson is actually trying to improve.

Wheatley is kind of a strange example.
he actually had a few good years in Oakland.
If you want to say Jarrod Bunch or George Adams that would make more sense.
