Giants' Links: Why Has Big Blue's Passing Game Been Grounded?

    http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...nd_burned.html

Excerpt: ?The Giants' passing game started with so much promise in Dallas on opening night. Eli Manning threw for 450 yards. Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle each had 100-yard receiving games.

Cruz had three touchdowns. Tight end Brandon Myers had a team-high seven receptions.

Turns out that was the high-water mark and as Week 14 approaches, the Giants' passing game, which is ranked 18th in the NFL (233.1 ypg), remains a work in progress. That doesn’t bode well heading into Sunday's game against a high-tech Chargers offense,

The trouble started along the offensive line, where injuries robbed the unit of continuity and chemistry. There have been sixth different starting configurations. Manning has been sacked a career-high 31 times and thrown 18 interceptions with four games remaining.

Left tackle Will Beatty has allowed a team-high 10 sacks.

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks has had a nightmare season. He has no touchdowns and has been party to some bizarre moments. Sometimes, the opportunities haven't been there for him to make plays. Other times, Nicks hasn’t taken advantage of them.

Tight end Brandon Myers, who has shown signs of life in the past two games, has largely been a disappointment.

As the Giants begin to turn their attention to next season, what do you think is the biggest problem that needs fixing for the passing game to get back on course?" Read more...

I think a big time receiving threat at the TE position would go a long way toward fixing the passing game, alas the Giants seem to prefer a TE who can block over a receiver, I know blocking is extremely important but wouldn't it be nice to have a threat in the passing game at that position....

ya this is also the same exact way they poorly utilized david wilson. hey lets spend a 1st round draft pick on a smaller sized fantastic runner and then try to use him more for blocking than actual running.

Wow! I had no idea that Eli has already been sacked 31 times... and Beatty has allowed 10 of them. I hate when players dissappear after a contract. It is probably the worst o-line Eli has had as a Giant. It's like we're in the Dave Brown era again.

This offseason we need to really focus on getting the talent level up on o-line and fixing the pass rush.

Offensive line was horrible / little better now but still not where it needs to be.
Nicks again another season where he was not healthy and couldn't make the plays he needed to.
Randle and Jernigan are not on the same page with Eli.
Cruz getting triple covered with Nicks no longer a threat and Jernigan couldn't beat my wife at the line of scrimmage.

Hey, it's a possibility that Eli is on the downside of his career and Nicks is regressing or needs a change of scenery, but I'm highly doubtful on both of those points. I believe that it ALL starts with the o-line, and this year's o-line is the worst that I can remember and I've been a Giants fan since around '81.

Focus on dramatically improving the o-line in the offseason and I bet that Eli and Nicks look like themselves. I know that Nicks is a FA after this season, but I'd franchise him to see what he can do in '15. I believe that he's got plenty of game left in him.

I don't know... franchising Nicks would cost around $10 million. I don't think he's worth that much.

We need O-line help as well as a blocking TE. It's been proven that a blocking tight end can be taught how to catch, however it's far more difficult to teach a pass catching tight end how to block. Fix the O-line and we can run the ball again which opens up the play action passing game allowing Eli time to make the proper read and great passes. The Giants are a running team I think we've gotten away from who we really are and it places our defense in bad situations there has never been anything wrong with running the ball and staying with the run before totally giving way to the passing game.

All the above posts are correct... We need a quality TE, Myers is just now showing some sign of improvement. Our O-Line stinks, nuff said. Hakeem Nicks has been playing at about 50% effort all season long so teams have been focusing on Cruz.

Give Eli some time to stand in the pocket and wait for a WR to get seperation.... it's an entirely different passing game.
