BILL PARCELLS NEARLY TRADED PHIL SIMMS EARLY IN HIS NY GIANTS' CAREER

Giants</a> have been without <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Phil Simms" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/phil-simms/" rel="tag nofollow">Phil
Simms</a>? It's a scenario that was much closer to reality than many people realize.
While appearing at the Long Island Association’s 2012 annual luncheon in
Westbury, New York
last Wednesday, former quarterback <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Phil Simms" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/phil-simms/" rel="tag nofollow">Phil
Simms</a> detailed a rough start in the relationship between he and then-head
coach <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Bill Parcells" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/bill-parcells/" rel="tag nofollow">Bill
Parcells</a>.</p>
<blockquote>
"I always thought [my full name] was Effing Simms," he recalled. "I used to
have to check my birth certificate and make sure my name started with a ‘P’ and
not and ‘F.’ And, if I did well, it was just ‘Hey, boy’ or something like
that.”</p></blockquote>
After being benched early in his career, he had had enough. Simms demanded a
trade from New York; a
trade request Parcells was all to happy to grant.</p>
<blockquote>
“People would tell me, ‘Hey, you hung in there.’ I was like, ‘What else was I
going to do?’ Before that, I told Parcells, ‘Trade me now!’ He tried, but the
organization wouldn’t let him," Simms said.</p></blockquote>
With the storybook already closed, we know how that fairytale ended. Simms
wasn't traded and he spent the entire duration of his 14-year NFL career with
Big Blue. He'd eventually become the Giants' all-time leading passer, and would
retire with two Super Bowl championships and one Super Bowl MVP award.</p>
It's one of the best trades that never happened."</p>
